Notes[]

  • Todd's existence is established by the Daily Planet Commemorative issue (included in the Smallville: The Complete Series DVD box set). His last name is never established.
  • Todd is technically mentioned in Absolute Justice, Part 2, when Carter Hall mentions the children of the JSA members.
  • In the comics, Todd Rice/Obsidian is one of the most prominent homosexual superheroes.
  • It is unknown if Todd is a member of the Justice Society, when it reformed in 2017.[1] In the comics, he has been a member of both the Justice Society and the Justice League.

Todd Rice/Obsidian as he appears in the comics.

Todd Rice/Obsidian first appeared in All-Star Squadron #25 (September, 1983). However, his chronologically first appearance was in Infinity Inc. #1 (March, 1984). Together with his twin sister, Jade, Obsidian shows up at the JSA Brownstone, with the two claiming to be the children of Alan Scott (which Alan denies). Jade and Obsidian joins forces with the other children of several members of the JSA to form their own superhero team "Infinity, Inc.".

The origin of Jade and Obsidian were explored over the course of the series. They are proven to indeed be the children of Alan Scott (who he had been unaware of). Alan had gotten married, but his wife had seemingly died on their honeymoon. However, what he did not know was that his new bride was actually Rose Canton/The Thorn, a mentally ill foe of Jay Garrick. Rose's evil persona had attempted to attack Alan one night, but Rose fled (with Alan believing her to have been killed in a fire). She soon discovered that she was pregnant, and gave the children up for adoption.

The twins were adopted by different families, with Todd being adopted by a working class family in Milwaukee. In his teens, Todd manifested shadow powers (the result of radiation from the Shadowlands, that Alan had been exposed to, decades earlier), and learned of his twin sister (who also possessed powers).

In the early 1990s, Obsidian joined the ranks of the Justice League. During this run, writers began dancing around the topic of Obsidian's sexuality. The topic was finally addressed in Manhunter Vol 3 #18 (March, 2006), where Obsidian is shown to be in a homosexual relationship with a lawyer named Damon Matthews.

In the late 1990s, Obsidian had a brief stint as a supervillain, when it was revealed that he had inherited his mother's mental illness, and began fighting the JSA. However, he reformed (and began taking medications), and later joined the Justice Society.
