Simone Chesterman was a seductive hypnotist who used a mystical gem which granted her powerful hypnotic skills.
Personality[]
Simone was an opportunist who took any opportunity for power that appeared. This desire for power led her to murder her own father so that she could wield the magic of his gem.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Hypnosis: Simone made use of an enchanted gem worn around her neck to hypnotize any being that she desired. She could use this power to make anyone do anything she told them, even Kryptonians like Clark Kent. The gem's hypnotic powers altered the mental state of whoever it was used on. Clark expressed affection and trust in Simone while carrying out her orders, even when told to kill Lex Luthor. When Martha Kent was told by Clark that he was leaving Smallville, Simone told her that she "Couldn't be more thrilled" and "Won't miss Clark one bit". After which Martha smiled happily and told them to have a wonderful time. The gem's power had the limitation that Simone needed to be in direct line of sight with the person she wanted to hypnotize, often stroking the gem while giving commands. It was for this reason that she could not hypnotize Lex Luthor because he was careful to contact her through video and not meet her in person. Those under the gem's hypnotic control were released when it was destroyed.
Early life[]
Simone's father was a world-famous hypnotist who used a captivating blue gemstone around his neck to hypnotize his patients. To escape arrest for petty shoplifting, she killed her father and began wearing the stone around her neck to hypnotize people whenever she needed to.
Lex Luthor found evidence of Simone murdering her father, and threatened to have her thrown in prison unless she used her hypnotic talents to break up Clark Kent and Lana Lang.
Season Five[]
Simone approached Clark at the Talon after Lana had left. She introduced herself and Clark said he was about to leave. Simone asks him what his hurry is and gestures to her amulet. Clark is immediately put into a trance when he looks at it. Simone tells Clark that he's not going anywhere until she says so, which Clark agrees to. She tells him that starting now, he will believe everything she says and do everything she tells him to. Clark asks what she has in mind and the two go out into the alley and kiss passionately. They were caught by Lois Lane and Clark introduces Simone as his new girlfriend. Lois told Chloe Sullivan about their escapade.
Clark took Simone to the Kent Farm and gave her a piece of his mother's homemade pie. She said that she needed champagne to go with it and he super sped away and returned with a bottle seconds later. When Simone asked where he got it from, he told her it came from Metropolis. When Simone asked how this was possible, Clark simply said that he can run really fast. She tested him by asking for some chocolate covered strawberries, which he brought her with super speed. Simone told Clark to get Lana to the loft under the pretext of him needing some kind of help. Meanwhile, Clark revealed his powers to Simone who then told Clark to make love to her. Lana then arrived to find them kissing in their underwear in the loft at which point Clark, under Simone's control, broke up with Lana. Chloe and Lois had meanwhile searched for information on Simone, and their suspicions about her were furthered when Lana told Chloe about her encounter with Clark and Simone.
Simone reported back to Lex that she had completed her task; however, Lex had also expected her to find out Clark's secret, but she refused to divulge her findings. When Lex threatened to turn her in, Simone returned to the Kent Farm and told Clark they would be leaving for California. Before they left, Simone instructed Clark to make a stop at the Luthor Mansion and kill Lex. Clark barged in on Lex and nearly killed him, but Chloe arrived and weakened Clark with kryptonite. With Clark out of commission, Simone hypnotized Lex and told him to kill Chloe and himself, but Chloe struggled for the gun with him. In the process, the gun went off and shattered the hypnotic jewel, as well as killing Simone, freeing Lex and Clark from her control.
Notes[]
- According to the article about the death of Simone's father, their last name is Chesterman.
- Her driver's license gives her name as Sasha Chesterman. It is unknown if this was a mistake by the props department, or if "Simone" was intended to be an alias in the episode.
- Discussing Hypnotic on the Talk Ville podcast in 2024, Michael Rosenbaum (in response to a question/objection from a fan) described Clark being intimate with Simone (while he was under the influence of hypnosis, thus forced to do whatever Simone told him), as Simone having essentially raped Clark (a fact that the episode itself treats lightly).[1]
