Featured characters[]

Title[]

  • A runaway is a minor who has left home without permission from legal guardians.
  • In the book, Clark becomes a runaway and meets up with other runaways in Metropolis.
  • In the universe of Amalgam Comics (wherein Marvel and DC Comics characters are merged into new ones) Runaway is the name of an amalgamation of two superheroes: Gypsy from DC Comics and Rogue from Marvel Comics.

Continuity[]

  • The story is set at some point after the events of Red.
  • This novel marks the first full acknowledgement of Gotham City in the Smallville continuity. Prior to this, the Arrival novel had mentioned the Gotham Globe newspaper. Gotham City would later be mentioned onscreen for the first time in Reunion.
  • The novel also seems to show the first known instance of magic being performed in a Smallville story, albeit not the first to chronologically occur.

Allusions[]

  • At the end of chapter 1, Clark mentions the upcoming Halloween dance, and notes that Lana will go as Scarlett O'Hara. Scarlett O'Hara is the protagonist of the film Gone with the Wind (1939), based on a 1936 book with the same name. In the film, one of Scarlett's suitors is Stuart Tarleton, played by George Reeves in one of his earliest film roles. Reeves is best remembered for playing Clark Kent/Superman in the television series Adventures of Superman (1952-1958).

Spoilers[]

  • In the story, it was predicted that Clark would have two great lovers in his life. This would later come true with Lois Lane's introduction.
  • The novel foreshadows Lana's romantic interest in Lex Luthor which would play a huge role in later seasons of the show.
