Parasite

A parasite.

This article is about the adrenaline parasites. For the season 8 character, see Rudy Jones.

The Kawatche Caves contained alien parasites. Analysis at Cadmus Labs showed that their physiology is completely unique and their DNA is not from Earth; along with the history of the Kawatche Caves, this suggests that the parasites may be Kryptonian in origin.

Powers and Abilities[]

The parasites secrete a substance that enlarges the adrenal glands of its host, inducing excessive adrenaline production that makes the host uninhibited and behaving increasingly impulsively the longer the parasite is in them, and act on any latent desires or aspirations. In all but two cases, the final result was death by suicide due to utterly irresponsible behavior (and even in those two cases, the survival was only thanks to pure luck). After the parasites were removed, the victims retained absolutely no memory of what happened during their infection.[1]

Vulnerabilities[]

The parasites are seemingly susceptible to normal harm. Dr. Frederick Walden and his staff were able to destroy an entire nest using liquid nitrogen.[1]

Appearances[]

Season Two[]

Exposure to the parasites made Pete Ross and Chloe Sullivan do outrageous things and eventually drive their own car off a cliff, which would have killed them if Clark Kent did not arrive in time to rescue them. Before them, the parasites caused the death of their fellow student Travis George, who climbed a scaffolding and fell to death during a rave party in the Kawatche Cave, as well as two other party-goers from Granville and Smallville Community College who later also died by self-inflicted accidents.[1]

The LuthorCorp team lead by Dr. Walden discovered the parasite nest when studying the Kawatche Cave paintings, and destroyed all but a few with liquid nitrogen. Lex Luthor then ordered these remaining specimens to be sent to be researched at the Cadmus Labs in Metropolis.[1]

Season Three[]

In Covenant, one of the parasites appears in a jar in Lex's secret room.

Smallville Issue 10[]

Sometime after, Lex's scientist Dr. Brody extracts enzymes from the parasites in hopes of making a profitable discovery with them. Desperate to continue his research, he injects a serum (containing the enzymes) into the lab monkey Lester. [2]

Lester broke free to and is encountered by Chloe (who he injects with the serum). Soon after, she injects the serum into Lana, resulting on them causing trouble throughout town. Eventually the serum wears off, and they are left with no memory of what happened. [2]
