The Optic Nerve Nano-transmitter is a piece of biotechnology that Lex Luthor used to monitor everything that Tess Mercer saw or heard. Lex had the chip implanted in Tess’ optic nerve after he had saved her from an explosion in South America.
Season Eight
Lex began to use the chip extensively after he had disappeared in the Arctic. He had arranged for Tess to become acting CEO of LuthorCorp and used her as a pawn to carry out his schemes. He used the device to watch and listen to every action Tess made in order to ensure she was loyal. Lex was able to use this technology to run LuthorCorp from the shadows and oversee Project Prometheus.
When Lana Lang returned to Smallville she infiltrated The Luthor Mansion]] and stole all the files relating to Project Prometheus. After Tess learned about the theft, she tracked Lana down at the Isis Foundation. After the two fought Lana gain the upper hand and held Tess at gunpoint. Lana hacked into the feed from Tess’ nano transmitter and explained what Lex had done to her. Tess found that she could be no longer loyal to Lex and she gave him a goodbye speech where she threatened to tear down his legacy. Once Tess finished her tearful goodbye message, she activated a jamming device concealed in her necklace which prevented Lex from receiving signals from the transmitter. (Bulletproof)
Later Tess began to travel around the world to prepare for LuthorCorp’s merger with Queen Industries. While she was on her trip, she made a pit stop in Geneva and had a plastic surgeon removed the nano-transmitter (Turbulence)
