Superman: The Secret Years #1 (February, 1985) introduces a Smallville High graduate named Billy Cramer, who goes on to study at Metropolis University with Clark Kent and Lana Lang, becoming their friend. Billy died in a fire, after running into a burning building to save a baby. Superboy (Clark) tried saving Billy, but failed.
