Lois Lane and Chloe Sullivan are maternal first cousins who are as close as sisters. Lois is about a year older and is closer to Chloe than her own sister Lucy. Chloe spent her childhood in Metropolis and her teenage years in the rural town Smallville, while Lois spent her youth years traveling around the world with her army general father Sam Lane. However, the two were still able to cultivate a close relationship across the distance.
Chloe first mentioned her cousin's name when she attempted to write under a pseudonym after being blacklisted from the Daily Planet by Lionel Luthor. After she was presumably killed in an explosion in 2004, Lois came to Smallville determined to investigate and later saved Chloe with Clark Kent's help. After Lois had to stay at Smallville and attend Smallville High to gather study points for admission into Metropolis University, their relationship has grown even closer. Lois found friendships in Chloe's close friends and a surrogate family in the form of Chloe's best friend Clark and his parents Jonathan and Martha. They help each other through crises, defend each other fiercely, and don't hesitate to risk their lives for the other. Chloe and Lois often rely on each other for moral and family support such as taking each other to the hospital or turning to the other for romantic relationship advice.
When the Metropolis University dorms closed in 2006, Lois offered Chloe her apartment at the Talon, which they continued to share until Chloe became engaged. Both girls have an insatiable curiosity and often worked together to get to the bottom of the strange local occurrences. As they have gotten older, they were simultaneously trying to cultivate successful journalism careers, forging an initial rivalry due to Lois' romance with their new editor, but settling into supporting each other. Their rivalry allowed them both to reflect on and realize their respecitve strengths (Chloe with computerized investigation, and Lois with on-site investigative reporting). This caused Lois has continued her path successfully as a journalist at the Daily Planet, while Chloe became the superhero information broker Watchtower.
Because Chloe cares deeply for both Lois and Clark, she delicately balances both relationships. Constantly trying to protect Clark's secret often directly conflicts with her support of her cousin. At the same time, Lois has been unknowingly saved by Clark several times; she almost always calls Chloe first when she is in danger, and Chloe inevitably sends Clark to rescue her.
Curiously, despite their close relationship, Chloe doesn't always confide in Lois about her greatest insecurities. She has refused to tell Lois about her mother's mental illness and her own meteor rock infection, while trying to protect Lois from making hasty, foolish decisions. Alternately, Lois is keenly aware of how much Chloe cares for Clark and tries to make sure Chloe doesn't sacrifice too much of herself for the sake of others. Together, they help each other reach their own heroic destinies.
Lois' arrival in Smallville was the direct result of an elaborate scheme to protect Chloe from Lionel Luthor. Lionel commissioned to have Chloe and her father Gabe killed after she testified against him and sent him to jail. Chloe and Gabe were kept in hiding by Lex Luthor, who borrowed help from Lois' father General Lane. Lane's involvement in Chloe's faked death was probably how Lois was able to obtain a video letter Chloe made for Clark Kent, pleading with him to get to the bottom of Lionel's machinations. When the FBI closed Chloe's case prematurely, Lois went to Smallville in her own investigation to find and question Clark about her cousin. She even dug up Chloe's grave after Clark suggested Chloe wasn't really dead, and the two worked together to locate and rescue Chloe before a metahuman assassin made another attempt on her life. After finding her cousin safe and sound, Lois intended to leave Smallville for her first semester at Metropolis University, but was informed that her acceptance was rejected due to her attendence record failing her senior year, by her father, who ordered her to obtain her remaining credits at Smallville High.
Chloe was thrilled to attend school with Lois and encouraged her to get involved by writing for her paper, the Smallville Torch. Lois was initially reluctant but her first effort was well-received. While staying with the Kents, Lois realized her cousin was deeply in love with Clark, but was outraged that he does not requite Chloe and only wanted to be platonic friends. She often offered her opinion on their complicated relationship with the intention of protecting Chloe from heartbreak. Chloe introduced Lois to all of her close friends and frequently got her older cousin involved in the bizarre events that occur in the town. Lois threw her a wild eighteenth birthday party and even attended the prom to see Chloe crowned Prom Queen. After Lois was expelled from University for drinking, the Kents offered to have her live with them, and she began working as a waitress at the Talon. When the second meteor shower struck the town, Chloe and Lois tried to evacuate together, but Chloe instructed Lois to leave without her so she could check on her friend Lana Lang.
Chloe moved back to Metropolis to attend Metropolis University in the fall of 2005, while Lois continued to live with the Kents. Chloe also began interning at the Daily Planet, answering the 24-hour news hot-line, and Lois would often visit and keep her company. She and Lois investigated the disappearance of dancers at the Windgate Club by pretending Lois was auditioning for a role and made her perform a sexy dance so she can have time to interrogate the other exotic dancers. Lois was promoted as Jonathan Kent's State Senate campaign manager and asked Chloe to help her dig up dirt on his opponent, Lex Luthor. Chloe also helped Lois move out of the Kents' and into the Talon apartment. There, Chloe was possessed by the spirit of a murdered girl and seemingly attempted suicide. A worried Lois took her to the hospital and blamed herself for not realizing Chloe was in danger of harming herself. They wound up being kidnapped by the girl's murderer, but were able to save themselves. Despite Lois' obvious concern, Chloe chose not to tell Lois that her mother was in a mental institution. Chloe and Lois attended the funeral of Jonathan Kent together and tried to help Martha and Clark cope. They helped Martha throw Clark a surprise birthday party to cheer him up.
During Chloe's second year in college, she moved into Talon apartment with Lois and slept on a futon. Lois decided that journalism was also her calling and began to investigate the Kents' errantly blown off barn door. Trying to divert Lois' attention from Clark's superpowers, Chloe discouraged her investigation and was not supportive of Lois' first effort. Undeterred, Lois shopped her story to the Metropolis Inquisitor and landed a job reporting for the tabloid. Chloe did help Lois investigate the secret identity of the Green Arrow, but abruptly stopped when Clark asked her not to. Lois called Chloe for help when she was kidnapped by enemies of Green Arrow and she and Clark were able to save her. Chloe and Lois attended the Kents' Thanksgiving Day celebration. Even though she figured out Oliver Queen's secret identity, Chloe encouraged Lois' relationship with him, helping her pack for a romantic getaway. Lois, in turn, was supportive of Chloe's relationship with Jimmy Olsen. After Lois broke up with Oliver, Jimmy thought Lois and Clark might make a good match and set up a blind date for the two on Valentine's Day. Affected by a lipstick she acquired from a novelty vendor, Lois became infatuated with Clark. Chloe was amused by her actions until Clark seemingly returned the affection, alerting Chloe (and Martha) that Clark and Lois were infected with red kryptonite. Chloe and Jimmy cured them and Lois did not remember the incident. Lois heard Clark and Chloe talking about an underground fight club and stole their notes in order to investigate the story. As Lois and Chloe got closer to learning the full extent of Lex Luthor's latest Level 33.1 project, Project Ares, Lois became the target for an experimental assassin. Clark and Chloe worked together to find her and save her. Chloe pleaded with Lois to not put herself in danger again by snooping further. Fueled by Lex's victimization of her childhood friend Wes Keenan, Lois ignored Chloe's warning and tracked down Lex's lab at Reeves Dam. She was stabbed in the stomach by a guard and called Chloe for help. Chloe found her cousin near death from blood loss. Devastated, Chloe's latent meteor power manifested and healed Lois, but rendered Chloe herself unconscious.
After Clark saved both girls from the ruins of the dam, he and Lois waited anxiously at Smallville Medical Center for Chloe to be revived. Lois was unable to just sit and wait, and asked Clark to stay so she could go look for clues. Much to Clark's devastation, Chloe was pronounced dead by medical staff, but inexplicably revived shortly after. She refused to tell Lois what happened, burning the evidence of her death certificate. Lois continued to investigate Reeves Dam and discovered a spaceship. She wrote a story about it and showed it to Chloe. Chloe recognized it as Kryptonian, and once again trying to maintain secrecy, said the story was not Daily Planet material. However, Chloe's new managing editor, Grant Gabriel, immediately took a liking to Lois and challenged her to develop the story. Lois tried to tell Grant that she would not betray her cousin, but Grant appealed to her ambition and tenacity, and Lois was unable to resist. He indeed hired Lois and gave her a desk right next to Chloe.
Grant frequently commented that Lois' talent and competition could spark Chloe's lost passion again, but Chloe and Lois remained on good terms, even helping each other out with their stories. When Lois was picked to write an exposé on Lex Luthor, Chloe gave her a list of questions to ask him. Grant proved to be extremely divisive between the cousins when he and Lois began a relationship. Chloe knew Lois was hired because of her potential merit, but she was worried that her reputation would be ruined. She gave Lois a stern lecture urging her to break it off with Grant. Lois acknowledged that it was a poor decision, but continued to see Grant without Chloe's knowledge. Lois and Chloe's relationship was used against them by Adrian Cross. Wanting to expose Lex's wrongdoings, he threatened Chloe's life to manipulate Lois into following his orders. Lois tried desperately to save Chloe, but in the end, she was saved by Clark's evil doppelganger, Bizarro. After Lois followed Lex to Detroit and located Kara, Chloe teamed up with Clark to rescue them from Finley, who shot Lex, then kidnapped them. Chloe had to use her healing power to revive Lex, but was dead for a considerably longer length of time. Upon waking, one of Chloe's first concerns was if Lois had seen her dead, but Clark assured her that she hadn't.
After Chloe's arrest and detainment, Lois correctly deduced that Lex Luthor had been involved and broke into the Luthor Mansion in an attempt to find information. She discovered Chloe's location and went undercover to rescue her.
Lois moved out of the Talon apartment when Chloe and Jimmy got engaged. She got drunk at their engagement party, admitting that she didn't really think Chloe and Jimmy were meant to be. Afterward, she was very embarrassed and apologetic, explaining that she didn't want Chloe to get hurt like she did with Oliver and Clark did with Lana. She gave Jimmy an awkward hug and welcomed him into the family.
Lois was in charge of planning of Chloe and Jimmy's wedding as the maid of honor. On the big day, she asked Chloe how she knew Jimmy was the one. When Jimmy was severely injured and Chloe went missing, Lois accompanied him to Star City in Chloe's place. When Lana Lang returned to Smallville, Clark and Lana rekindled their relationship. Knowing that Lois' feelings towards Clark had changed, and Clark was considering his feelings towards Lois as well, Chloe directly warned Clark against hurting Lois while he tried to figure out what he wanted.
During Chloe's birthday, she admitted jealousy of Lois' successful life and then wished she could have it. A magician took her wish literally and Chloe woke up enchanted in Lois' body. She lived a day in Lois' life as a reporter, believing that Lois was popular at the Daily Planet and that Clark gave Lois "puppy-dog eyes", and told Lois that "Clark doesn't mind her assertive flair". After the switchback, Chloe decided her dream of reporting was living in the past and that she wanted to try something new, and became the information broker for Oliver Queen's team of superhero vigilantes.
Chloe came to pick up Lois after she was not allowed into a convention and reassured her after she was doubting herself as a reporter and the avoidance of the Red Blue Blur. While Chloe got mugged, Lois fought off her attackers and one escaped with Chloe's car and laptop. Lois created the persona "Stiletto" and pretended to be a superhero in order to meet the Red Blue Blur and to jump-start her career again. Later, Lois confessed that she was in over her head and trying to correct the fiasco. Chloe was prompted to almost confess her involvement with Davis Bloome, but decided not to.
After Chloe left town with Davis Bloome to protect Clark, Lois believed Clark should have done more to find her. Clark later called her as the Red Blue Blur and promised he was looking for Chloe. Directly after, Lois went missing, after accidentally picking up a magical time-traveling ring. Clark then told Chloe that he'd looked everywhere for her, to no avail.
After missing for three weeks, Lois mysteriously returned from the future, with no memory of ever being there. Upon her arrival, Lois ended up on a Metropolis monorail and found herself under attack by a female assassin, who was also transported back from the future. While the pair fight, the train loses control and derails off the track. After the crash, Lois ends up at hospital and reunites with Chloe there.
After Lois went to the Kent Farm in hopes to find Clark, she returned home, bringing Shelby with her. Chloe is surprised to find the dog there and when Lois told her that Clark wasn't there but there was food for Shelby, Chloe covered for Clark, saying she was taking care of his dog in his absence. As their conversation changes subjects to the Blur, Lois nonchalantly reveals she's been communicating with the Blur exclusively. Chloe is noticeably bothered by this. Chloe later took Shelby home when Clark arrived and Chloe confronted him about remaining in contact with Lois.
Chloe prioritized Clark over her cousin, as she deceived Lois when she believed that Clark was the Blur. Chloe became concerned for Lois as she got herself further embroiled in Clark's dangerous life and closer to the Kandorian invasion mystery. Chloe helped find Lois when she was kidnapped by Tess Mercer.
Chloe disapproved when a gemstone-kryptonite infected Lois revealed that she was marrying Clark. Chloe criticized Lois and made her cry.
Chloe and Lois ended up double-dating on vacation together when Oliver and Clark both took them to the same romantic getaway inn. Lois was excited about Chloe and Oliver, but Chloe made her promise not to make a big deal out of it.
Lois talked about Chloe's disappearance with Oliver, as she remained optimistic she would return as she believed she was on vacation. Lois was completely unaware of the sacrifice Chloe made for Oliver, as Oliver didn't tell her.
Lois received a letter from Chloe that congratulated her on her and Clark's engagement and a necklace to use as her "something borrowed". She then remembered a previous conversation she had with Chloe at the Talon before she left for Egypt and before Chloe disappeared, in which she asked Chloe how her and Oliver's relationship worked what with his heroic responsibilities considered. Chloe asked what Lois really wanted to know and Lois asked her why Lana and Clark never really worked out. Chloe smiled and told her that it was because Lana wasn't the one fated to be in Clark's life.
Lois and Clark were trapped in a virtual world set up by the VRA. Chloe was doing her best to try and get them out using a virtual avatar of herself. Lois told Clark that Chloe had contacted her and explained everything. He refused to accept her explanation and explained that Chloe left without explanation, and that he coudn't trust her. Lois realized that Clark had been hiding his resentments and pointed out that Clark expected Chloe to trust him all these years even when he was keeping secrets. Chloe's avatar ended being hijacked by a soldier of the VRA. It went to the Daily Planet as Clark and Lois prepared to jump the portal back into the real world. The fake avatar insisted they were suffering from post-traumatic stress and asked how Clark could let Lois jump to her death. Lois realized that the avatar was under someone else's control and punched her through the office, knocking it out. Clark and Lois got to the rooftop of the Planet but found the Chloe avatar waiting for them. Many more of them appeared and Lois told Clark to trust himself and with Clark flew along with Lois away from the surrounding avatars and back into the real world. Lois later asked Chloe to be her maid of honor at her and Clark's upcoming wedding and Chloe accepted. Lois was at the Planet looking through a box of Perry White’s old mementos from the 60s when Chloe came
in response to her cousin’s call. Lois explained that she was going guerilla and needed Chloe’s help. She wanted Chloe to hack into all the national newspaper websites. Chloe and Lois later showed Clark a "Beacon of Hope" website which contained videos of support from the Blur’s many supporters. Chloe assured them that there were hundreds of thousands of supporters and all they needed was a place to be heard. Chloe, Lois, Clark, Oliver and Martha all later watched with joy as the VRA was repealed in a nationwide vote on live television. Chloe, Lois, and Clark later reopened Watchtower together.
Chloe made a heartfelt toast at Lois' and Clark's bachelor/bachlorette party, first to Lois and Clark and then to friends, to which everyone at the party began to drink and laugh and have a good time. The night later got out of control as everyone drank champagne that Zatanna had charmed. Clark and Chloe woke up together confused and began to try to find everyone else. Clark saw a text message from Lois from the night before, which said "I just need more time". Chloe persuaded Clark not to doubt what he has and that his relationship was in a solid place. Chloe and Clark arrived at Fortune Casino where she spotted Lois and Oliver onstage as showgirls. The mobster owner of the casino Amos Fortune then spotted Chloe and yells that she was part of the group that stole his money. A chaotic fight then ensued, and Lois made use of the confusion to claim her ring back, which she did after some crawling on the floor. Oliver threw some punches, as Chloe fired shots with two pistols she managed to take from Fortune's guards. Afterwards Chloe, Lois and everyone else at Watchtower watched the amusing footage recorded by Emil Hamilton from the night before.
Chloe appeared at the Daily Planet in order to convince Lois, who was insistent that her and Clark should not get married, to not back out of the wedding. Chloe gave her Clark’s wedding vows. Once Lois read them, she realized the mistake she was about to make and ran out of the Daily Planet to prepare for the wedding, much to the relief of Chloe. Chloe then later took her place as the maid of honor at Clark and Lois's wedding. Towards the end of the ceremony as Lois was about to put on Clark's wedding ring she noticed that it was made out of gold kryptonite. Thinking fast, she prevented Lois from slipping the ring on Clark's finger by knocking it out of Lois's hand and flinging it in the air.
At Watchtower, a frazzled Chloe complains about the lack of speed of the computer as she attempts to access the databanks of the Korolyov. Lois comes by with coffee and asks what has Chloe so stressed. She explains that she's trying to find out just what was the energy ribbon - or "rift," as she refers to it - that Clark saw in space. When Lois refers to her "forever-fiancé", Chloe apologizes for her and Oliver being married while Clark and Lois have yet to be. Lois assures her that they will get married when the time is right, when the world is in less danger, Clark isn't trying to save it, and Lois isn't busy reporting on the danger and Clark's saving the day. Chloe commiserates, acknowledging how tough it is when Oliver is rebuilding Queen Industries while going out and being a hero, as she's busy taking care of Watchtower and setting up similar Watchtower hubs in each of the Justice League member's home cities while working her day job as a reporter for the Star City Gazette.
As Chloe thanks Lois for the coffee, the computer completes accessing the systems on the Korolyov. With the camera feeds now online, Chloe rewinds to the incident the rift and the debris that smashed into the station. Lois and Chloe are both shocked to see something floating amongst the debris: a spaceship.
Lois later breaks into Level 3, in a Janitor disguise, in order to find something to bring Lex down. As she makes it past the security door, her cellphone rings. As she answers the phone, security laser alarm beams are revealed to her. She correctly guesses and thanks Chloe for the assist.
Chloe asks if Lois is there to steal the "brain machine" she asked Emil to help gather. Lois recounts what she witnessed at the Ridge Facility, as well as the mysterious note Lex left her, and says she is snooping around to get some answers. She also admits to missing Clark and needing to catch Lex in some manner of wrongdoing to compensate. Chloe suggests that Lois look in Lex's office, and when she makes her way there, she finds a green arrow with a note addressed to Lex attached.
At Watchtower, Chloe, Tess, Clark and Lois discuss Earth-2, which was presumably annihilated by the Monitors, and Clark wonders what crime could that Earth have committed to deserve to merit annihilation. Chloe says everything she knows about the alternate Earth and the Monitors but also informs them that the memories, that were transported to her from her doppelgänger never actually took root and she only gets fleeting glimpses. Tess informs them that Lex is preparing his jet to visit Moscow and Lois thinks of a way to sneak in as a press attaché and go to Russia with Lex so she can keep an eye on him. Clark then says he has a better idea and the proceeds to communicate with another member of the team, asking for a favour.
Chloe accompanies Lois at the Daily Planet and Lois says she shouldn't walk her here in her condition but Chloe says that she is not that pregnant. Lois asks about Oliver and Chloe says he is in San Francisco, where he just closed a deal for Queen Industries to provide financial assistance in rebuilding Pier 39. Chloe says the more they help cities get back on their feet after super-related disasters, like they did with Washington and San Francisco, the less crime will have the chance to take advantage of the situation. Then Lois asks her why she is in Metropolis with her than being out there and Chloe responds that she is just very bored. Just then, Lois receives a message from Clark, who is inside Lex's plane, with a photo of him and Lex.
Back in Metropolis, Chloe blankly stares at the skyline until Lois comes in and tells her they have a story to chase down in Gotham together.
Chloe and Lois arrive in Gotham City and they find Batman and Nightwing, who have been interrogating a criminal known as Zsasz, on a rooftop. Bruce seems to be a little surprised that the two women were able to trace him and then he invites them to the Batcave.
There, the two cousins get impressed by the amazing underground complex that Bruce has assembled. Bruce is investigating the murder of a man dressed as Superman, which clearly looks like a hate crime connotations against the aliens and the recent revelation of Superman about his origin. Batman is using his billion dollar computer to make a face reconstruction of the corpse based on photos from the crime scene, so they can identify the dead man but the results the computer shows leave everyone speechless, the face of the murdered man is none other than Clark Kent or someone who looks like him.
Chloe, Lois and Barbara are in the Batcave and are talking about where Chloe is going to raise her baby, with Barbara suggesting Gotham City but Chloe clearly disapproves. Lois asks Chloe if she is going to stay in Metropolis or move back to Star City, Oliver's home town, but Chloe says she has still some months to decide. Suddenly, they receive a message from Batman, telling them he's "going dark." Without a word, Barbara races out of the cave on a motorcycle.
In the year 2018, Chloe received a call from Lois and informed her that she had sent "something blue", in the form of a blue ribbon, for her upcoming wedding with Clark, wishing her the best.
During the events that ended the days of Earth-2, Chloe is seen standing alone in an almost destroyed Metropolis. Suddenly her cousin, Lois Queen, runs toward her. Lois screams to Chloe to get to her space ship. Just then, a particle beam from a monstrous ship flying overhead shoots down and vaporizes Lois, leaving Chloe screaming in horror.
