- "Dad, you have no idea what I'm capable of."
- — Lex to Lionel, Hothead
Alexander "Lex" Luthor (born 1980) is the billionaire CEO of LexCorp and LuthorCorp.
Lex decisively turned to his dark destiny after a series of events over the years: His friendship with Clark Kent went back and forth; he blackmailed Metropolis Inquisitor reporter Roger Nixon into his employ; his relationship with his father Lionel Luthor grew deeply troubled after he became LexCorp's founder and CEO; his relationship then marriage with Helen Bryce failed; he became LuthorCorp's second CEO; his manipulative friendship with Jason Teague developed; he led various experiments with kryptonite; his race for Kansas State Senator against Jonathan Kent turned ugly; his "partnership" with Brainiac evolved; he managed various inhumane projects involving metahumans and meteor freaks; his rivalry with former schoolmate Oliver Queen turned deadly; his relationship then marriage with Lana Lang imploded; his encounters with Lois Lane worsened; he illegally cloned his own brother Julian Luthor; purchased the Daily Planet and named himself CEO; manipulated Kara Kent; murdered his own father with his bare hands; and finally discovered Clark's secret before using the Orb to collapse the Fortress of Solitude on himself and Clark.
After he had grafted his many clones' best pieces together to create his composite clone LX-Ø to which he was restored into thanks to an alternate-reality Lionel Luthor's deal with Darkseid, Lex met with Clark to look forward to their destiny together as arch-nemeses. He then mortally stabbed his half-sister Tess Mercer, who erased all of his memories using a neurotoxin.
Due to the loss of his memories, Lex distrusts and hates Superman, seeing him as a potential threat to Earth. He has fulfilled his destiny as Superman's greatest enemy.
In 2018, Lex becomes President of the United States.

Physical Appearance
- "I've been bald since I was nine. I'm used to people judging me before they get to know me"
- — Lex, Pilot
Lex is 6ft in height, and has blue eyes, and has been bald after being caught in the 1989 meteor shower.[1] His choice in clothing is mostly consisted of well-tailored suits with the dark color themes of black, blue, purple, brown, or gray. However, he occasionally wore typical style suits.[2]
Over the years, Lex had accumulated various wounds and scars, but had them fixed.[3] When he accepted darkness, he wore dark clothing along with two black gloves and a long black leather trench-coat.[4]
When he was restored into his clone, Lex had a mass amount of stitches and a damaged right hand that he covered with his typical style of clothing and a black glove.[5]
After the collapse of the Fortress of Solitude, Lex was left grievously wounded. His body was scarred and bloodied and his face was always concealed by a breathing apparatus. Tubes were attached at several parts of his body and he appeared to wear a chestplate, likely to accompany his breathing apparatus.
As the President of the United States, Lex wore a complete white suit with a black glove on his right hand.[6]
Lex's appearance remained almost exactly the same throughout the years.
Personality
- "This is Smallville! Meteor freaks, alien ships, cryptic symbols! These threats are real. Someone had to take control! Someone has to protect the world."
- — Lex to Clark, Descent
Lex had set out to be a great man. A person out to do good unlike his father. Ultimately, he has become a man of pure evil. Completely devoid of inhibitions, conscience and humanity, and has been mentioned to be worse than even Lionel was before he turned good.
Lex's personality traits stem from his mother Lillian Luthor's loving care and his father Lionel Luthor's neglectful, unfulfilling upbringing.[7]
As a child, Lex was very close and protective of his ailing mother yet fearful of his emotionally and physically abusive father. His father would criticize him harshly whenever he showed the slightest weakness.[8] After losing his red hair thanks to the first meteor shower, Lex was teased mercilessly by other children for being bald.[9] Despite his parents' contradicting methods, he was a quiet yet kindhearted little boy.[10] After his mother's death, Lex became a calloused, alienated, and self-destructive young man.[11] In his young adult years, he partied hard, got arrested, and was a general source of embarrassment and disappointment to his father.[12]
But since he moved to Smallville, Lex's personality underwent many changes despite being forced to move there by Lionel. While struggling to overcome Lionel's ruthless and uncaring reputation[13], Lex was honest and kind, willing to use his wealth to help others.[14] He also stopped being self-destructive, and worked hard to become a productive, valuable citizen.[citation needed] While Lex occasionally showed signs of the evil man he would become, his friendship with Clark helped to keep this at bay, but the evil within him was inescapable.
Desperately seeking the love of a family, Lex constantly sought his father's approval and was envious of Clark's relationship with his own father Jonathan Kent.[15] He also thought of Clark as the brother he never got to have.[16][17] Additionally, his romantic relationships are intense, as he married both Helen Bryce and Lana Lang after relatively short courtships. Lex has indicated that he possesses some sort of spiritual beliefs, as he is well-versed in the Bible and has mentioned on more than one occasion that he prays.[18]
With an extensive knowledge of the world and many skills in corporate business, certain sciences, and efficient street skills, Lex is highly intelligent and intellectual, as he quotes a variety of historical figures and often uses scholarly and literary facts to illustrate his point of view. Also, Lex is an accomplished classical piano player,[19] enjoys fast cars,[20] scotch,[21] chess,[22] pool,[23] fencing,[24] swordsman,[25] marksman,[26] and an effective hand-to-hand fighter,[27] owing his skills to years of private tuition.
After Lex became LuthorCorp's second CEO, he began to abandon truth and justice in search of power and control,[28] abusing his company's assets and resources to fund questionable and illegal scientific research on cloning and alien intelligence, and abandoning the company's agricultural roots and converting it into a leading military contractor,[29] had developed prisons or laboratories on which he experimented or controlled metahumans. While Lex has killed people in the past, he became much more willing to kill or torture someone simply for making him angry or if they fail to cooperate.[30]
While his thirst for power had become stronger and his relationship with Lana intensified, he seemed to focus more on obtaining power than Lana's difficult pregnancy (which he had faked to get Lana to marry him).[31] Because of his thirst for power, Lex purchased the Daily Planet (Metropolis' main newspaper) and named himself CEO where he used his authority to kill stories,[32] monitor employees' computer usage,[33] and fire reporters.[34]
Clark has accused Lex of being a coward, And this has been proven on several occasions.
However, Lex did indeed want companionship and family in some form. But as his deeds made such things impossible for him now as closest to him now greatly hated him, He had his late Brother Julian Cloned.
Lex's friendships and relationships were dominated by his desire for control. He attempted to control people by offering them help, but only on his own terms. This included finding out the "truth" about people he suspects of having secrets, often investigating them without their knowledge.[35] He couldn't abide it when people hid the truth from him, as it prevented him from achieving the control that he so greatly desired. As long as he could control someone through gifts and obligation, he would do anything in his power to protect them.[36] As soon as he could no longer control someone, they quickly become his enemy.[37][38]
Lex's desire to protect people went beyond individuals.[39] Lex viewed himself as a great man who is on a search for truth, and who wants nothing more than to help people and humanity. He was blind to the idea that his help is purely conditional: if the person he's helping doesn't completely depend on him or reveal the entire truth about their background to him, he will turn on them completely and make them his enemy. He often blamed others for not coming to him right away with the truth, or for not asking for his protection.
Lex had a narcissistic belief in his own importance and saw himself as a victim: in his mind, his relationships would have been successful if only other people trusted him or came to him for protection. He was oblivious to his own role in this dynamic, and how his desire for control consistently turned friends and lovers into enemies. The people who grew to despise him the most were Clark, Lana, Lois, and Chloe. As Lionel attempted to mend his ways, even he became increasingly disturbed by Lex's growing ruthlessness and even resented himself for having put him on that path. When Lionel discovered that Lex had his late brother Julian cloned, Lionel confronted Lex in disgust for such a twisted perversion.
As the mutual animosity between Clark and Lex grew, Lex's hatred toward Clark even became encoded in his DNA; some of his clones displayed this trait.
Perhaps Lex's most dominant trait and the one he shares in equal measure with his comics counterpart is his incredible degree of self-obsession. Lex is apparently incapable of seeing people outside of how they relate to him and believes that many, if not all, of their actions are designed specifically to hurt him. Whilst this initially seemed to simply be a result of his upbringing and playboy lifestyle, it increasingly became his main trait to the point that he saw everyone around him as extensions of himself, viewed his role as a leader only in terms of how it could benefit him and more or less believed that the world existed to serve his purposes. Conversely, Lex also has a serious inability to admit his mistakes and believe his actions are justified no matter how inhuman they are, to the point where he is almost incapable of accepting responsibility for his actions, often quick to blame his father or Clark for his own failings and accusing them of sabotaging him. This reaches its peak when he starts blaming others for his increasingly evil actions. Despite having accepted his destiny of becoming the tyrannical and ruthless leader his father originally raised him to be, Lex occasionally acknowledges the effects his thirst for power has on his ones he care about.[40]
After having a second chance at life thanks to Earth-2 Lionel's deal with Darkseid, Lex had become a psychopath. However, he genuinely loved his half-sister Tess.[41]
Despite having lost all of his memories thanks to Tess, Lex retained his intelligence, is seemingly still power-hungry, and does not trust Superman, seeing him as a potential threat.[42]
Powers and Abilities
- Peak Healing Factor: Although not exactly at superhuman level, Lex was shown to heal somewhat faster and more efficiently than the average human, enough to allow him to survive serious wounds (as he has been stabbed and shot on numerous occasions), and also to be knocked out dozens of times without experiencing any permanent brain damage.[43] He was also able to survive a poisoning which would kill most people, and the doctors who treated him were shocked he survived it, although he had to have his blood purified every 72 hours until the exposure to the Crystal of Fire cured him completely. However, Lex is still as susceptible to injury as normal human beings are; although he managed to survive the collapse of the Fortress of Solitude, he had to be constently hooked up to life support; even months later he was still at rather critical condition, indicating that his healing factor, while far better than average, isn't superhuman.
- Elevated Immune System: After getting caught in the 1989 meteor shower and getting exposed to green kryptonite at age 9, Lex was given a superhuman immune system; as such, it cured his asthma and he has not been sick ever since that day, as the kryptonite increased his white blood cell count, making him immune to common colds, fevers, viruses, and other ailments (although advanced diseases such as cancer can still kill him). The kryptonite is also the reason he is bald.[44]
- Skilled Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Lex is an expert in judo, taekwondo, boxing, swordplay, and gun handling. He was able to hold his own in hand-to-hand combat against Oliver Queen. Though he still seems to have a bit of a glass jaw since he went down after a good punch to the face from a de-powered Clark and one good smack from Lois.[45]
- Swordsmanship: With the Black Kryptonite, it separated Lex's true nature Alexander evil side, and he the was able to beat Lionel in fencing, which his good side was unable to do.
- Genius-level Intelligence: Lex's greatest asset is his high level of intellect. He is a skilled strategist with a keen business sense, and his access to vast resources, advanced technology, and manpower allow him to directly and indirectly hold his own against more powerful enemies, whether they be superhuman or not. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of subjects in history and culture. He is also a brilliant scientist, often assisting in the creation of LexCorp projects, especially when they are intended to be used against Earth's heroes. Thanks to Tess using Summerholt's neurotoxin on Lex in order to erase his memories, not only is his mind healthy but that it has been operating at a higher percentage, basically making him a super-genius.
- Multilingual: Lex has been shown reading, understanding or speaking the following languages to various degrees: Latin, Greek, French, German, Russian, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese.
- Polymath: Lex is skilled in the fields of history, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, linguistics, computers, engineering and electronics.
- Business Management: Having learned from his father, Lex is one of the most shrewd yet skilled businessmen in the world. Lex is not above using cutthroat tactics, unethical practices and illegal operations to maintain the success of his business empire.
- Manipulation: Lex is an expert at manipulating people to get what he wants. He knows how to get into people’s minds and exposing their weaknesses and using their own secrets against them. He is also an expert with using blackmail.
- Tactician: Due to years of tests and trials from his father and having read many literary works on tactics and strategy, Lex is a very skilled tactician. Lex has been able to stay ahead of and out think Clark, Oliver, Chloe, Lana, and even his own father.
- Nanites Regeneration (temporarily): When Brainiac injected him with nanites and the Project Vessel drug, it made him immune to all pathogens, diseases and infections. He healed a cut on his hand with gray nanites within seconds.
- All Kryptonian Powers (temporarily): After getting abducted into Brainiac's Black ship, Lex gained Kryptonian powers.
Early life
Lex was born the first child of Lionel and Lillian. He attended boarding school from an early age, and also frequently played with Jason Teague, Oliver Queen, and Patricia Swann, the children of his parents' powerful friends, the Teagues, the Queens, and the Swanns, respectively.
While growing up, for Lex, The Luthor Mansion was the opposite to what Clark had at the Kent Farm. It was a cold and loveless place full of secrets. Even before Julian’s death, Lionel was cold and distant as a father, and would manipulate, intimidate and even physically hurt Lex and Lillian. Everything was always a test for Lex, there was always a lesson or moral to challenge him. Although Lillian loved her son, she was basically a prisoner in the mansion and seemingly suffered from mental illness and was also not able to show much warmth or comfort to Lex.
One day while Lex was in his room painting his Roman Soldiers, Lionel busts into the room yelling that Lex opened his briefcase. He begins to get rough with Lex grabbing and pushing him to tell the truth, Lillian tries to intervene but when Lionel finds out she was the one who opened the case he becomes angry against her and Lex has to watch as Lionel pushes his mother to the ground.
In one of Lionel’s few fatherly moments, he took Lex on a trip to Washington DC. Lex thought it was just a business trip but, realized his father took him to the Air and Space Museum only because he knew Lex loved things that could fly. (Descent)
In 1989, Lex overheard his father's conversation with Robert Queen, Edward Teague, and Virgil Swann discussing something called "Veritas." Days later, Lionel took him to Smallville on a business trip at his mother's insistence. Fatefully, they arrived on the day of the meteor shower. The meteorites cured Lex's asthma but caused him to go bald, in addition to apparently super-charging his immune system.
Days after returning from the hospital after the meteor shower,
Lex befriended a dark-haired boy who was living in the mansion for a short period of time.
In 1991, Lex's brother Julian was born. Their mother suffocated Julian in early infancy during a bout of severe post-partum depression. Lex discovered the murder and took the blame, fearing his father would harm his mother but knowing he would not be harmed as he was Lionel's only remaining heir. He then repressed the memory and grew up believing that he really had killed his brother.
After the death of his mother in 1993, Lex was raised without real affection, parenting, or love. Instead, Lionel lavished Lex with money and gifts, and sent him away to expensive, exclusive boarding schools. Even though his nanny Pamela Jenkins promised to stay and raise Lex, Lionel forced her to leave.
While at Excelsior Academy in 1996, Lex and his friend Duncan Allenmeyer were bullied by Oliver and his friends. Lex eventually turned on Duncan to gain Oliver's acceptance and beat him up so brutally that Duncan stumbled into the street and was hit by a car. Lex expressed regret at betraying Duncan but never forgave Oliver for the way he treated them. Lex graduated from Excelsior in 1998, and then went to Metropolis University, where he got kicked out after playing a practical joke on the son of Intertech CEO Edgar Huff.[46]
At the age of 17, Lex intervened in a race-motivated attack on a couple at a beach, protecting them from the skinheads who wished to do them harm. When police arrived, Lex was wrongly thought to be the perpetrator of the attack due to his hair condition, thus forcing him to spend 24 hours in jail. Lionel Luthor and a group of lawyers from Metropolis soon flew in to spring Lex from lockup, with the Police Chief issuing a live statement on tv apologizing for Lex's treatment.[47]
In 1999, Lex took Amanda Rothman to Club Zero, knowing she would see her fiancé Jude Royce flirting with other girls. When Jude attacked Lex, Amanda shot and killed him. Lionel handled the incident in such a way that Lex's name stayed out of the papers.
Like his father, Lex graduated from Princeton University with a bachelor's degree in biochemical engineering in less than four years, and was taking a break from graduate studies at Yale in 2001 when he was sent to live in Smallville to manage LuthorCorp Fertilizer Plant Number Three.[48]
Smallville TV Series
Season Eleven
Six months after the events of Contact, Lex had gained control of LuthorCorp and all of its assets, renaming it LexCorp. He routinely watches Superman's flight above the city. He works with General Sam Lane. Lex thinks that Superman is a serious danger for Earth.
Later, he met Clark on the street. Lex introduced himself to Clark, because he doesn't remember Clark. Lex only knows him from the press video clips that they were friends when they were young. He hardly recognized Clark. Clark is surprised that Lex knows that they knew each other years ago. Lex doesn't understand how they could ever be friends. Clark responded with "As you said, we were younger." When Clark suddenly disappears, he sees his sister Tess. Lex reveals to Clark he sold the Daily Planet because he feels that the newspaper has become more tabloid than news source.
Sometime later, Lex undergoes an MRI at Met Gen. The Doctor informs him that Lex's mind has been operating at a higher percentage since the Neuro-Toxin erased his memories. Lex ask why he has been seeing hallucinations of Tess, and the Doctor suggest he see a Therapist and says the psychological toll of Tess's suicide must be affecting him. Then, Tess appears behind him. She mocks his unwillingness to reveal the truth about her death, and he ask if she is a ghost. She recounts her death months before and admits she's not a ghost. Lex pushes her against the wall and ask what she is. Tess tells him he could get the answers he wants if he would stop worrying about Superman's potential as a threat. Lex tells her that Superman is a threat, and Otis interrupts, and ask if he should delay the press conference in order to research the Neuro-Toxin, but Lex refuses to delay the conference.
At the conference, Lex begins his speech but is interrupted by Lois. Lois asks him where he disappeared to after he was declared dead and before Tess's death. Lex angrily assures the public that he has not forgotten about Tess, and that he exiled himself from the outside world as a way of escaping the Luthor legacy. He then claims that he only returned because Tess called him before committing suicide and the guilt of her death convinced him to recreate the Luthor image. Clark shows up and whispers to Lois that they both know Lex killed Tess, but can't do anything without proof. Lex then begins criticizing Superman and the Justice League, claiming they have failed to protect humanity and now the world is in more danger than ever. He announces the Guardian orbital defense platforms as a means of protection and the public is impressed, save for Lois and Clark. She ask who will pilot the Shuttle to bring the satellites into orbit on such short notice, and Lex introduces the pilot, Commander Hank Henshaw.
50 Miles outside of Metropolis, 10 hours before flight, Lex watches the LuthorCorp shuttle in the distance, Oliver angrily confronts him, and warns him that the military will shut down his project, and that they knows just what he's capable of. Lex counters, asking if Oliver ever considered the military won't stop because of it. Oliver then counters, saying he knows what Lex is capable of, to which Lex claims he doesn't know, because of the loss of his memories. Oliver questions Lex on Tess's suicide, and Lex justifies it, claiming LuthorCorp's decline and the world almost ending caused her to do it.
Oliver denies his claims, and threatens to reveal that Lex killed Tess. Lex counters asking what would happen if he revealed Oliver was building a secret moon base for his team. Lex then ask Oliver about their friendship as teenagers, which Lex claims he's glad to have forgotten.
On the day of the launch, the shuttle explodes forcing Superman to rescue the crew from being destroyed. Henshaw wakes up on a stretcher, with burns from the radiation exposure. Superman learns that the shuttle explosion was not a misfire. On the roof of LexCorp Plaza, Otis nervously confronts Lex with the results from his research, but Lex interrupts him, saying he wishes to savor the moment. Otis, confused, explains that the situation is terrible for LexCorp and questions his apparent cheerfulness. But Lex explains he has a good reason to be cheerful, stating he and Superman are about to have a very interesting conversation.
In LexCorp Plaza, Lex arrives in his pent house office, as Superman angrily breaks his glass window by clapping. Superman accuses Lex of activating the Guardian Platform mid-flight, but Lex dismisses the claim, saying the accident could have been avoided had the military not forced the private sectors hand. Superman accuses him again, nearly attacking him, until three military helicopters show up, demanding that Superman step away from Lex.
Lex claims that Superman's appearance at the Korolyov and Guardian incidents, as well as his apparent attack of LexCorp Plaza, Superman had given Sam Lane a reason to intervene. The military tell him he is under arrest, but Superman refuses as the ready their guns.
Inside of LexCorp Plaza, Tess once again appears behind Lex, who has found the information on the Nuerotoxin, and how it causes the patient to form a mental bond with whomever administered the Nuerotoxin, and so they share one mind, with Tess as a secondary consciousness.
In S.T.A.R. Labs, Emil Hamilton attempts to comfort Mrs. Henshaw as she mourns her husband's condition, when Lex walks in. Emil alerts him that he does not have clearance to enter, but Lex dismisses his protest. He offers to help save Commander Henshaw but says he requires one of Emil's H.E.D drones.
In a S.T.A.R. Labs bathroom Tess appears to Lex once again, where he admits he can sense her when she appears. He also reveals that he plans to repeat the procedure his team is conducting if it is successful, and even plans to try it on Tess's consciousness. She questions why Emil agreed to the procedure and he admits it took a bit of manipulation to convince him. He then ask Tess just how close her and Emil's relationship was and she smacks him, with Lex expressing his delight over finally having a way to remove her. Otis interrupts informing Lex that the procedure is over. He then expresses his sorrow for her condition to the invisible Tess, much to Lex's annoyance.
Emil ask Mrs. Henshaw to come into the operating room as her husband wants her, but is kicked out by Lex's security guards. Henshaw's robotic body goes online and his wife tries to comfort him as he begins to grieve his condition. Lex congratulates him on his second chance, but Hank angrily grabs him and lifts him into the air asking why Lex did it.
Lex tries to calm Henshaw but to no avail as Henshaw blames Luthor claiming that Lex is not know for error. Terri Henshaw comes to Lex's defense claiming that it was Superman's fault since he didn't rescue him in time to which Luthor agrees as Superman arrives on the scene. Lex watches as Henshaw turns his full attention on him and lashes out on him in a fiery battle in the city.
The following morning, Lex is in his office as repairs are constructed upon his window at LexCorp. When Superman arrives where he attempts to apologizes for misjudging him before on their last encounter. Only to discover that the Guardian shuttle incident was a no accident it was a means for Lex to coat Superman with an isotope radiation that he could track Superman's whereabouts anywhere on Earth with his satellites. Superman realizes what this means and angrily threaten Lex this isn't over as he leaves.
Later that night, Lex sleeps as Tess watches on.
It's morning once again in Metropolis and Otis walks in on Lex sleeping in his office. Otis reminding Lex about his appointments of the day. He's meeting with a representative of WayneTech. Lex never makes it up to his penthouse anymore; he stays up all night at his office laptop watching Superman's energy signature fly all around the city fighting crime and saving lives.Lex then talks about how much he doesn't trust Superman, Superman has gotten under his skin, though he suspects that in his missing memories, Lex might have known Superman. Superman does behave like he knows Lex. Lex also points out since goosing Superman with the radioactive isotope that allows him to track the Man of Steel's movements, Superman's heroic activities have increased four hundred percent. Why, it's like Superman has nothing else to do anymore.
Later, at the Ace of Clubs, Lex and Bruce have their lunch meeting on the patio while Barbara Gordon is having lunch with Otis. Bruce and Lex are discussing why billionaires have the right to order off menu and Wayne Enterprises building a Super Collider in Antarctica, but Barbara Gordon and Otis—I don't think those two have ever interacted before. Barbara tells Otis that Michael Holt and Ted Kord have joined in on the Wayne Super Collider project. Otis wonders aloud what it's like to work for a different rich guy. Barbara says they're all the same. Lex passes on participating and cites that he's still rebuilding Lexcorp from the damage Tess and Lionel (the alternate Lionel) did when they ran the company. Bruce makes no bones about him being real cool with not getting in business bed with Lex. Then, some revelations: Thomas Wayne opted out of joining the Veritas that Lionel help founded to find the Traveler. Lex and Bruce's lunch is prematurely ended by Superman.
Later, at Lexcorp R&D, Superman and Lex are all forced friendly-like as Lex analyzes the teleportation vest and admits the technology is his, but it was stolen. Stolen, in fact, during a series of robberies made on Lexcorp and other companies, one of which was foiled way back by the Green Arrow and Superman. Lex surmises that whomever created these teleportation vests using all that stolen technology would have to be very familiar with Lexcorp's patents and proprietary coding. Which leads Superman to Stryker's Island prison and The Toyman. Safely incarcerated and seemingly not a suspect, according to Warden Draper, since he's been under constant supervision in "hyper-solitary".
Meanwhile, at LexCorp, Lex Luthor is enjoying video of the showdown between Superman and Batman. Lex keeps pausing and rewinding Batman, powered by red sun energy, beating up Superman. Lex also thinks he has a television that allow him enhance and move around corners inside the frame. He's bummed when Otis reminds him his TV can't do that. Maybe Lex should invent one? Otis liked the other match between Nightwing and Green Arrow better . Oliver Queen then bursts into Lex's office to accuse Lex of harassing him with those coded emails. When Oliver leaves, Lex notices the time stamps are all from the dead of night.During the night, Otis sees Tess take control of Lex and rises from his peaceful slumber and sleepwalks to his office, speaking gibberish and caressing Otis' face. Then she starts sending out the emails.
Lex and Oliver argue about the e-mails that keep flashing on Oliver's computer, and Lex comes to realize that Tess has been controlling his body while he's asleep in order to send them.Otis hands a partly burnt popcorn to Lex, noting that it is early, though it's never too early for entertainment as Lex says. Giving Lex alone time, he soon has a brief argument with Tess. Lex notes that Tess couldn't figure the typing out, and when Tess asks why he's in a good mood, he points out what's on the news: Superman has been shot, and Batman is on the run. Tess points out her death by his hands, a memory he does not have anymore, but Lex isn't angry over she did, as Luthors are "survivors" and she did what he would've done if the roles were reversed. Lex will now be strapped to his bed, preventing her from doing what she did again. He also notes that Tess might have a connection to Superman, as she hopes he's okay as she watches the monitor where his signal is (from the radiation Lex gave him).At Lexcorp, Lex Luthor wants Tess who is still inside him to tell him everything and if she chooses not to tell him he'll take what he wants to know by force.
Lex attempts to tap into the memories of his sister Tess' consciousness trapped in his own mind to determine what she knows about Superman. Using a procedure developed by the former LuthorCorp, Lex appears in the memory of the moment Tess was left in the care of Granny Goodness by their father. The grown Tess materializes to help young Lutessa run from their brother down a long hallway. They manage to barricade themselves behind a door. As Lex approaches, he is called to a red door to exit the procedure. Otis informs Lex of an attack on the city that would interest him. Outside, Dr. Simon Jones, a genius with psychokinetic and telepathic abilities calling himself Psimon, attacks the citizens of Metropolis using his powers to levitate and surround himself with a number of metallic orbs. Superman intervenes as Psimon mentally picks up a semi tractor-trailer and attempts to drop it on a small child. As he tries to talk Psimon out of the attack, Lex arrives to offer his own solution. Angered that it was LuthorCorp's experiments that altered him, Psimon turns his attack on Lex. Superman quickly rescues Lex and speeds him away from the scene.
Superman returns to Metropolis after hiding Lex away in Mexico.Later when Lex finds his way back, he returns to LexCorp, where Lois talks with Otis while waiting to speak with Lex, attempting to get him to admit to his boss' secretly nefarious nature. Lex intervenes, inviting Lois into his office. She confronts him about Psimon and what he intends to do about this and other consequences of the LuthorCorp experiments that granted people such abilities. With Tess chiding him, Lex offers Lois the company line on their corporate responsibility of past transgressions.
Lois reminds him of her first-hand knowledge of Project Ares and how the fall-out of that program brought down Reeves Dam. As Lex shows surprise regarding the dam and the two talk about regret for his actions prior to losing his memories, Tess forces Lex's body to write a note on a Post-It against his awareness, which Lois picks up. On her way out of the office, Lois reads the note and is baffled by its one word: "Help!"
Lex visits Psimon in Hyper-Solitary on Stryker's Island. LexCorp technicians have attached a helmet to him that emits a psionic dampening field to keep him in check. Lex has them lower the field slightly so that he can have Psimon search his mind to pull out any thoughts or memories that might still exist before they were wiped. Psimon is able to see Tess' consciousness and she motions for him to keep quiet. Instead of offering anything useful, the criminal chides Lex for being "an animal" and "a monster." Lex retreats.
In LexCorp Tower, using the Project Intercept apparatus to go inside his mind, Lex confronts Tess and reveals that his team of neurosurgeons has discovered the area of his brain where her consciousness resides. He makes her an offer: tell him everything she knows about Superman or he will have the doctors damage that part of his brain, effectively killing her off. Tess rejects his ultimatum. Lex awakes and tells the doctors to prepare to perform their procedure the next morning.
Lex meets with Otis to discuss the incident that occurred at the Ridge Facility. Otis informs him of only one fatality and that, so far, no press has heard of what happened. As they pass by one of the janitorial staff on their way out of the building, the janitor steals Otis' security keycards. On Level 3, the janitor is revealed to be Lois as she uses a keycard to access the floor.
Later Lex angrily surveys the room at LexCorp where the Project Intercept machine once stood. He asks after the security tapes and the night guards, and Otis tells him the tapes were stolen and all of the guards quit. Lex turns to the vision of Tess and she denies having anything to do with it. He realizes that it must have been Oliver Queen. Otis remarks that it would likely be best to postpone the procedure to cause his boss brain damage to kill Tess' conscience. Frustrated, Lex leaves.
At LexCorp Plaza, Lex heads towards his office only to find that the lights aren't working. As he calls for Otis, Superman appears with Lex realizing that he found a way to remove the radiation off him. The Green Arrow appears revealing they are here to take Tess back. Then Lois appears surrounding Lex. As Green Arrow is about to use a taser arrow, Lois slaps Lex knocking him unconscious. As he wakes up, he is helped by Otis. He then realizes what the heroes did and angrily asks about Tess.
Inside Lex's office, Otis wakes Lex Luthor, who has not come out of his room since his plan to track down Superman failed and Tess was extracted from his head. Otis brings to him good news that stimulates the curiosity of Lex: a recording of a spacecraft that landed at Smallville months ago.
At LexCorp output, Tess remotely locks the doors preventing Otis to accompany Lex, and outside there are three former employees of LexCorp heading towards Lex. They blame him for allowing one of its patents end up in the hands of Queen Industries. All three are very angry with him and Lex says they still should thank him because a few years ago he would have had them killed and not just fired. Hearing that the three men begin to beat up Lex.
Lex wakes up at the hospital after the beating, and sees that Otis has sent a psychologist to talk with him. Lex recognizes that Otis cares for him and says that this is the only reason he hasn't completely fired him. He also admits that he has stopped beating for Lexcorp shares rising. After that Lex is discharged and leaves.
Later Lex visits a secret lab of LexCorp, called Network, where its scientists report to him the analysis of meteorites they have found along with the ship that Otis informed him about previously. The results are puzzling: the meteorites are somehow from the Earth itself, and seem as if our planet had exploded, which makes everyone confused. In addition, their atomic charges are exactly opposite of what they should be. They also inform him that the ship fell at Smallville and that is now owned by S.T.A.R. Labs and so Lex says he wants the object, and this is not a request.
Lex, who orders his men to attack S.T.A.R. Labs, is confronted by Otis who wants to be assured that Lex's men won't use any lethal force. Otis tries to convince Lex not to harm anyone saying that even if he didn't know him before he lost his memory he knows he is not that kind of a man anymore. Lex responds by quoting the author Ralph Waldo Emerson saying that “the only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be” and then orders his men to begin the attack.
Tess, while controlling a huge robot, attacks the soldiers sent by Lex in S.T.A.R. Labs and then breaks into the place, where Lex and Otis are. Lex orders Otis to leave the place. Tess then attacks her brother and she is about to kill him, and he even tells her to do it, but at the last moment she reconsiders and ends her connection with the robot, sparing the life of her brother.
Later at LexCorp, Otis brings breakfast to his boss and they talk about what happened. Otis says that he erased the security tapes in which he appears asking the robot to end his miserable existence. Lex says that the data of the ship that his team managed to steal from S.T.A.R. Labs seems conclusive that there was a parallel Earth, which was destroyed and Lex says he'll figure out how to save this one.
Lex Luthor is informed about the crash in Russia by the newscast and then his assistant, Otis, who enters his boss' office, comments on the recent revelation of Superman being an alien. Lex seems not to care too much about it, feeling that somehow he already knew. Otis also informs Lex that the recent crash in Russia has yielded similar readings came from the ship that crashed in Smallville months ago and it is now kept in S.T.A.R. Labs. Lex realises that the "thing" that fell in Russia may be from alternate reality too so he orders Otis to prepare the jet so they can travel to Russia.
Boarding the plane, Otis tells his boss that he has invited the press to chronicle his "greatness", much to Lex's annoyance. They then watch as Superman fly over them with Lex seeing it as a challenge but Clark, who is inside the plane as a representative of the Daily Plane, says that it might be more of a reminder. Lex is obviously disappointed having Clark Kent accompanying him in his travel, saying that Lois Lane would be better company.
Inside Lex's jet, Clark interviews Lex about what he believes crashed in Russia and asks him why he is so interested on that and if it has something to do with his alleged attack at S.T.A.R. Labs. He then asks him about his rivalry with Superman but Lex responds by saying he doesn't trust Superman and in fact nobody should trust him, he also says he is glad the world is finally starting to sober up. Clark then says that his Lex's amnesia is not a secret so he asks him if it has something to do with that and Lex says he is not sure but maybe his hatred for the superhero has something to do with his old life.
It is on this trip, That Clark and Lex, In a Manner, enjoy their old friendship and shows the type of relationship that might have endured had Lex not given in to evil.
After that Lex starts to ask Clark about his relationship with Lois and why they haven't get married yet but Clark says they just haven't find the right moment yet. So Lex advises him not to wait too long, mentioning the amount of coverage Lois gives to Superman, indicating with that he might lose her to another man. Suddenly the jet gets into a big storm and because of a lightning they lose an engine so Clark prepares to take action but surprisingly someone else catches the jet from its fall. At first, Lex thinks that Superman might have saved them, something that makes him clearly irritated but it is revealed they were saved by a Russian team of superheroes, called the Rocket Red Brigade, who welcomes them in Moscow.
Meanwhile the Russian Prime Minister is informed that the President wants to talk to him about an important matter but he says that it has to wait because he wants to meet with Lex Luthor and find out what he has to offer for his prisoner, revealing that he has already imprisoned the fallen Monitor.
In Moscow, Lex Luthor meets with the Russian Prime Minister and they talk about the alien. The Russian leader has granted him the privilege of seeing him first out of gratitude because in the past, Lex helped his nephew Mikhail with his metahuman condition. Lex tells to him everything he knows about the being who fell from the sky, that it is not of this world and is responsible for the destruction of an entire parallel Earth. The conversation is settled with Lex Luthor taking a look on the captive Monitor, and offering a lot of money to the Prime Minister to take him back to the U.S.
Lex questions the Monitor, who reveals that his name is Ray-Lan. Luthor attempts to negotiate with him but Ray-Lan shows his contempt for this world, so when Lex, seemingly disappointed with him, decides to leave, Ray-Lan says that he knows what is happening on this world and what actually happened to his mind, offering to fill his memory gaps. Luthor then asks Ray-Lan what does he want in exchange.
The freed Monitor is killing soldiers on his way out of the facility. Lex asks him why he does that, and Ray-Lan responds that if he does not understand his purpose, he doesn't deserve to live so he proceeds to kill Lex too. Fortunately, Superman's timely intervention saves Luthor, and the fight between Superman and Ray-Lan begins. After the fight Ray-Lan, who lands on a building, succeeds to escape, while Lex wonders where he has gone, but Superman, seeing his own blood on his hands wonders how the Monitor could hurt him.
Ray-Lan has just escaped from the facility in Moscow he was held captive thanks to the chaos he created. Ignoring Lex who shouts at him to follow the Monitor, Superman flies above the clouds.
Switching back to his civillain disguise, Clark returns to the scene of conflict and reunites with Lex Luthor. Lex decides to go and find the Monitor on his own, whom he can trace through a device. Clark goes with him and when Lex thinks Clark can not hear him, he tells to Otis that he took Clark with him because he wouldn't mind if something happened to him.
Later near in Russia, Clark and Lex have tracked the Monitor in the abandoned and radioactive city of Chernobyl. While searching the place they find there a hole in the ground that leads them to an underground level where a huge spaceship is hidden.
Lex and Clark explore Monitor's spacecraft. Lex tells to Clark that the meteor shower that caused the accident of Karolyev ("Guardian") were the remains of a destroyed parallel Earth, and that suggests the existence of others. In fact, deep inside the spaceship, the two discover a glass tube-like structure that somehow contains several parallel earths that have already been decimated. But before they could react to the incredible view, the Monitor appears and tells them that their world has already far exceeded its useful life, and the two of them will not live to see its end.
Beneath Chernobyl, Clark and Lex try to escape from the Monitor, who is stalking them through his ship while revealing bits and pieces of his plan. Eventually Lex and Clark manage to escape the ship, which fires its thrusts in preparation to take off. Clark takes advantage and flies himself and Lex out, timing his movements to make it look like they were thrown out by the blast. They land on a bridge, and the Monitor surprises them and shoots Clark in the chest, sending him flying through the air and into a frozen lake. Lex dives in after him and approaches the sinking body of an unconscious Clark, whose shirt has been ripped off by the hit of the Monitor, revealing his Superman costume.
Lex is diving into the frozen lake trying to reach Clark, but another shot coming from the Monitor hits Clark and makes him sink deeper in the water, making him unreachable. Luckily for Clark, Lex couldn't reach him and so he did not see his Superman costume inside the shreds of his civilian clothes. Ray-Lan grabs Lex from the icy water, throws him on the snow and says to him that he will end up dead like Clark because he does not deserve to witness the majesty of the final destruction of this Earth. Lex, who is suffering from hypothermia, asks Ray-Lan to answer him just one question for himself, why does he hate Superman so much and why, though his memories are gone, he still feels that terrible hatred for him when he sees the "S" on his chest.
Ray-Lan does not have the time to answer Lex's question as Superman appears and attacks the Monitor, throwing him far away in the forest. Because of his hypothermia, Lex has fainted and Superman lights a fire around him to warm his body.
Ray-Lan remotely controls his ship but Superman swoops down and destroys his arm cannon. Lex tells Superman to kill the Monitor or else his peers will keep coming. Superman tells him that's not his style and then flies directly into the beam of the ship, using it against itself and destroys it. As he falls, the ship causes a great explosion throwing shrapnel and fire, but fortunately Otis, wearing an armor of the Rocket Reds that he "borrowed", intervenes and saves Lex.
Lex wakes up in a bed in Metropolis General with Clark sitting in a chair beside him. Lex is shocked to see him alive, and Clark explains that Superman saved him from drowning and warmed his body in the same way he did with Lex's. Luthor apologizes for dragging him to Russia in his expedition, but Clark says he volunteered. Clark tells him the Monitor probably would've tried to destroy the planet with or without Lex's intervention. Clark starts to leave, when Lex tells him he's a good liar. Despite Clark's consoling words, Lex says he can see the disapproval in his eyes. And he suspects he saw that look in his "past life," before he lost his memories. Clark acknowledges something of their history, saying that many times Lex's need to save the world often butted heads with his ego.
Later, at LexCorp, Lex, after uttering a whispered thanks to Otis for saving his life, which Otis almost certainly didn't hear, and a scientist connect the comms device, which was stolen by Lex with a radio station to launch a powerful message to the multiverse: "To all my counterparts residing in what my people have called the multiverse, my apologies for joining the party this late. My name is Lex Luthor and I think it's time for a little chat. "
Lex wonders why hasn't any of his other counterparts in the multiverse communicated with him yet and Otis suggests that there might not be any of them left. Lex says that he can't regain access to the Monitor's ship in Russia because of the D.E.O. but Otis suggests that the Monitor's transmitter may just need a larger battery, which gives Lex an idea. He tells Otis to put a meeting to the books with Ted Kord and Michael Holt, as he starts to rethink Bruce Wayne's offer about the super-collider endeavor. Then, Lex watches Superman's new powers on TV and says he recognizes the symbol on his ring, but can't actually remember where from.
Lex proceeds to visit Abigail Hunkel, the housekeeper of the former headquarters of the Justice Society of America, which contains Alan Scott's old power battery, to learn more about the history of the Green Lanterns.
Lex is making no progress in his search for answers on the Green Lanterns from Mrs. Hunkel. He wants to know about Alan Scott and comes to the point of threatening Mrs. Hunkel, but she tells him nothing, and also warning him that she will call Ted Grant. Suddenly, the power battery lights up, relaying a distress signal from Superman.
In LuthorCorp, Lex tells Otis that he didn't get any Lantern-related info from the Justice Society mansion. He then orders Otis to get a list of all the individuals who wore Yellow Lantern rings but Otis tells him that all of them are already in prison. Lex says that something about them was compatible with the rings, which are now on his possession, and he needs them to assemble a team in order to save the world.
In Antarctica, Lois is touring a Higgs Boson supercollider facility created by the combined efforts of Michael Holt and Ted Kord, with the financial assistance of Bruce Wayne. As proud as they are of their accomplishments, they tell Lois that none of it would've been possible without the last minute contribution of Lex Luthor. Lois accuses Lex that because of him her fiance almost died back in Russia. She also warns them that no one should trust Lex and she hints that Lex stole alien technology from D.E.O.'s secured area in Chernobyl. However, Luthor calmly tells his partners that he is only there to give.
Sadly, things don't go as planned for Kord and Holt, because when the scientists start the experiment, a violent gateway opens pulling everyone and everything into the Bleed, the rift between parallel universes, with Lois clinging to a railing. The only one who seems happy about the incident is Lex who obviously has planned everything.
Moments after Superman and Lois' disappearance, Ted wonders where did Superman and Lois went and Lex remarks he's just killed two birds with one stone.
In Antarctica, Lex is ready to leave, saying to Kord and Holt that "he's out" as the facility is unstable, given the fact that Superman and Lois Lane disappeared. Otis informs him that the Monitor's device has already started to lose charge and Lex says that he was hoping not to reveal his new security force so early but now he doesn't have a choice. Holt says that he doesn't need any security force as their own private security, Booster Gold, can escort his plane back to domestic airspace but Lex reveals that he lied to them and that he intends to buy Holt and Kord out. Kord says they are not selling but suddenly Lex's private security, which is revealed to be powered by rings of the Yellow Lanterns, fires at them and Lex then says they should consider it more of a hostile takeover.
Lex demands from Kort and Holt to give him the access codes for the equipment but they refuse saying that he killed Superman and Lois Lane. Lex insists his actions are to save the world and commands his security force to shoot both men when they refuse him again. Then he orders his henchmen to find Booster Gold and eliminate him.
Lex Luthor continues his hostile takeover of the Antarctica facility, convinced his actions are for the greater good of the universe. He forces the wounded Kord and Holt to work on the equipment and put it back on track. Otis, who is putting a communications interface together, insists that firing Holt and Kord's machine again is not a good idea and reminds Lex that, so far, no other Lex Luthors from alternative universes have tried contacting him. Lex says he's done trying to reach them and intends to contact someone else.
Lex orders his Yellow Lanterns to torture Booster Gold and then remove all of his gadgets so they can study them later. Booster remains defiant, despite his obvious pain. He tells Lex the two of them aren't all that different. They both want to be heroes, he says, but Lex can't shake his greed and ambition. Lex answers that, since losing his memory, he's yet to take a single life. He suspects he'll have to someday, and he doesn't want Booster to be the first. Lex then visits Kord and Holt, who say the proper adjustments are in place with the super collider to accommodate Lex's alien tech. After that, Lex's Lanterns imprison the two scientists once again along with Booster Gold, and Lex order Otis to activate the machine so they can make some history.
Superman wakes up in a holding cell along with Lois after he was attacked by the super-powered Monitors and then they suddenly start hearing a very familiar voice. That voice belongs to Lex Luthor, who achieved to communicate with the Monitors and suggests, rather than razing his universe, simply "reboot" it.
In Antarctica, Lex continues transmitting his message to the Monitors.
Inside the Monitors' ship, they listen to Lex's proposal to reboot the universe. Superman interrupts his proposal, saying that what he is proposing is madness. Lex is surprised to see that Superman and Lois are still alive, as he was wondering where have they ended up. Lois calls him a monster but Lex insists he's the only one actually trying to save the world by reasoning with the Monitors. The Monitors end the transmission, saying they have much to discuss.
Lex's Yellow Lanterns decide to turn against their employer. However, Lex reveals his contingency plan, that his subordinates' rings were slaved to his own ring and programmed to self destruct on command, and that command is given. After the corpses of the henchmen fall to the ground, Lex and Otis make their exit.
Lex and Otis return to Metropolis, with Otis asking Lex if he appreciated the view of the city before he lost all his memories as much as he does now, and how hard he worked to position himself as a good man emerging from the darkness. Otis wonders if that also includes making deals with the Monitors because it looks like they easily agreed to his plan of rebooting the universe as they watch Washington D.C. as well as five other cities apparently destroyed. Lex whoever says while the Bleed in Russia was mainly destructive, but the blue Bleed seems to have broken down for reconfiguration, with Otis wondering how they would be able to sort it out with Lex answering if they can reform everything to their specific design. Lex then assumes that no one would remember exactly what had happened and only knowing the reality created by the Monitors. Otis wonders if they hit Metropolis, they would bring them back together as a duo with Lex saying he doesn't imagine they would.
Confronting Lex he makes a correct assumption that Luthor had quietly mapped the Monitor and Manhunter systems during his machinations with them. Lex is impressed with Superman's intelligence and points out he has done just that. Due to his dealings, instead of a Red bleed his organizing a reshuffling Blue bleed has bought them time and that Superman has to agree to a temporary truce in order for everyone on Earth to succeed. The two men then shake hands, with Lex revealing he knows that if Lois is harmed it will likely mean his undoing either from the reboot or at Superman's hands. It was clear at this point that any friendship that had existed between the two was gone.
Superman delivers a rousing speech to the heroes. The other Earths might have been erased or rebooted but they are determined for their Earth to survive and their continuity to continue. With that Superman, Luthor and all of Earth's heroes attack the incoming Manhunters.
The powerhouses are stuck with their specific missions, Superman and Supergirl are clearing a path for Lois and Lex.
A bickering Lex and Lois manage to get on the ship with their "skeleton key" and a little luck in the form of Superman. They aren't the stealthiest and are quickly discovered. Lois preps her nightsticks but is horrified when Lex kills the crew. Lois is disgusted but the plan must go ahead and she uploads the virus. Chloe and Tess confirm access, with 15 minutes to complete the process they can stop the entire attack but of course this is when Lois realizes Lex is not on their side. He keeps his promise to Superman that he wouldn't harm Lois but picks her up and slings her out of the ship towards the ground. Otis asks Lex if he has killed Lois, but a smiling Lex points out the sky is filled with superheroes. Lex then points out that though the heroes want to stop the reboot altogether, he on the other had wants to use it to reshape the world to his particular tapestry.
Pods land in Metropolis releasing Monitors as all the older heroes form an army to fight them, Superman arrives with Lois and asks Tess if their backup plan worked. Tess confirms that a second virus was planted in Lex Luthor's battlesuit. Lex hears a recording of Tess and is shocked as his armor falls apart. Lex Luthor is nothing if not resourceful and hunting around the dead Monitors on the ship he activates a self destruct on one of them. As the hull rips open Superman is there to aid his escape and Lex is relieved that at least they are honorable.
Lex is confronted by the Monitors and Manhunters, for the first time ever with no backup plan and no way out. Before Lex is killed a truck slams into his attackers crushing them, and out climbs Otis from the wreckage. Lex is for once pleased and grateful to have Otis as a friend only then to see the hapless friend incinerated by a laser of a barely functioning Manhunter. In a rage Lex crushes its skull dropping to his knees in sadness at his loss.
As it turns out Otis isn't quite dead, as Lex tends to his friend's wounds, blinded and fading fast, the well meaning sidekick tells Lex he doesn't have to be a bad man.
Three weeks later LexCorp holds a major press conference and Lex introduces the public to a new monument built on the former Watchtower site. In a massive turnout Lex publicly admits that if it weren't for the heroes of earth the universe would be lost. Then Superman makes a speech that is broadcast all over the world. As the tarp falls away it reveals a stunning bronze statue of the Justice League.
Lex is looking outside the Limo with his new assistant attempting to gain his attention. Kitty tells Lex he has a conference call with research and development regarding the new ultra-thin smart phone testing, a meeting with Michael Holt and Ted Kord regarding settlement and damages, an exclusive interview with Jack Ryder, approvals on the cloud-seeding project in Bolivia, real estate inquiries regarding "Nanda Parbat" and he is finally at his 10:00 appointment with the President at the White House. Kitty inquires if everything is alright, which Lex replies on paper yes and she is practically perfect in every way. She thanks him for the opportunity to become his assistant and she would learn a lot from him. However when she calls him Lex, He coldly and swiftly tells her to refer to him as Mr. Luthor only and that she slumps her shoulders asking if that should better, Lex replies no and he isn't sure if it ever will be.
The president was tending his garden, he calls Lex the "people's hero". The president says although Lex doesn't wear a costume, his actions allowed the other heroes enough time to turn the tide so the entire world owes him a debt of gratitude. Lex replies it's all in a day's work which the President note is a humble thing to say but doubts Lex has ever been a humble man. Then the president says he would want to keep Lex around to liaise with the Justice League in case they face another crisis and asks him if he considered a career in politics at some point, which Lex with a smile on his face, replying he always felt that he was meant for greatness.

In The Comics
Lex Luthor has been Superman's archenemy for most of the superhero's existence, having been envisioned as his dual opposite; morally depraved and relying on intellect over strength. Due to several shifts of continuity, Luthor's history has varied over the years. He was first introduced as a mad scientist and career criminal who knew Superman as a child (then known as Superboy) and blamed him for the loss of his hair following a failed experiement.
Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, however, Luthor was reimagined as a wealthy scientist and CEO of one of the most powerful high-tech conglomerates in the world, LexCorp. After many defeats at the hands of Superman, Luthor turned his sights on more power, starting a campaign to become president of the United States of America; Luthor managed to secure his presidency and became more dangerous than ever.
Because of major changes in the history of the DC Universe Lex's backstory was changed like many others in the DC universe. Many new changes mirror the Smallville television series. Lex's family background has a long history with the city of Metropolis. Some of Lex's ancestors were among the pilgrims who founded the city, others were amongst the Native Americans who were to meet them. Over the centuries, the Luthor family became wealthy and influential, Lex's great-grandfather Wallace Luthor being a millionaire industrialist at the beginning of the 20th Century. He lost his fortune though, in the stock market crash of 1929, and went to his grave a pauper after having to declare bankruptcy.
The family fortune would not be rebuilt until the arrival of Lex Luthor, the son of Lionel Luthor (an abusive alcoholic) and Letitia Luthor. Lex cared little for his parents, though he did love his sister, Lena. In his teens, he lived for a time in Smallville with his aunt, also called Lena, and there he met the young Clark Kent and his friends Lana Lang and Pete Ross. The stand-offish and superior Lex was friendly with Clark for a time, but eventually left Smallville under a cloud of suspicion after his father died in mysterious circumstances (engineered by Lex, though this could not be proved). Leaving his sister behind in Smallville, Lex left for Metropolis and founded LexCorp.
Lex turned the company into a multi-national corporation that would ultimately come to dominate the city of Metropolis and own every media in the city and use it to enforce his public image as a wealthy benefactor. The one paper outlet that had always stood free was the Daily Planet (he would come to buy it much later). One such critic was the young reporter and Editor In Chief Perry White, whom Luthor detested, due to his outspoken attitudes, even when the Planet condemned his actions with an outrageous editorial signed by White himself. As a result, when Clark Kent is first inducted into the Planet, the newspaper is almost bankrupt, dilapidated and unable to afford new reporters. Luthor made many criminal connections and industries, anything to help him rise to be the unchallenged master of Metropolis. His legitimate businesses attached to LexCorp stretched from anything from telephone companies to personal gaming devices. As part of his image, Lex created the illusion of being a caring philanthropist. He became the most powerful man in Metropolis, both financially and in the world of organized crime. Lex would create havoc on the streets by selling weapons to the gangs of Metropolis and using his female staff of underlings to keep blackmail files on all of the organized crime groups in the city, so that Lex could use them to further any schemes he had planned. However, this all ended with the arrival of Superman.
During the several months after Superman first arrived in Metropolis, as part of his philanthropic image, Luthor, by this time the most powerful man in Metropolis, had taken to picking a random person from the supplicants who gathered at LexCorp's gates every morning in order to bestow the chance of a new life upon them.
His choice on this occasion, though, was Rudy Jones who, after eating a donut contaminated by an unknown chemical compound, was transformed into the Parasite. Superman stopped the Parasite's rampage, overshadowing Luthor and infuriating him. Lex contacted General Sam Lane, who was convinced Superman was a threat, and informed him that Superman was an alien. He transformed one of Lane's men, Sgt. John Corben, into Metallo and sent him out after Superman, but Metallo was defeated and Superman, previously an object of suspicion in the city, feted as a hero. When Luthor came to bestow his gifts on a grateful populace the next day, no-one was there; Lex was no longer the most powerful man in Metropolis. This cemented Lex's lifelong hatred of the Man of Steel. Eventually, Luthor went from hero of the people to public enemy number one. Not much else is known on Lex's new backstory as it has only been elaborated. Lex also seems to have a hatred for Clark as well as Superman shown when he assaulted a powerless Clark. This Lex is described as both a "shrewd businessman" and scientist, as well as a criminal mastermind.
Distinguishing Luthor from the majority of Superman's rogues gallery is his normality; Luthor is an innovator and possesses no special abilities besides that of his own cunning; however, he did have a talent for manipulating other super villains so that they would work with his plans, Luthor owned a crystal, which could help him bend people's will, to more easily control them. He is bent on destroying Superman, whom he perceives as an alien threat.
Though the show has not shown his full potential, Lex's scientific knowledge is at genius-level. Rather than harnessing his genius for good, Luthor seizes power for his own benefit and is a threat at large. He claims that as soon as he kills Superman, he will move onto "solving all of the world's problems", but during the recent One Year Later storyline, where Clark lost his powers for a year, all that Lex accomplished was the creation of temporary superhumans and digging up a Kryptonian warship that he attempted to use to destroy Metropolis.
Lex has also developed another surprising connection to Superman, in the form of Superboy.
When Superman was supposedly killed during his battle with Doomsday, Project Cadmus worked to create a Superman clone. However due to Kryptonian DNA being difficult to clone, they merged Superman's DNA with a human's. Originally it was believed to be the DNA of Cadmus' Director Westfield. In truth however, Lex, who was working with Cadmus, had his DNA used instead. Lex has in the past demonstrated a fatherlike behavior towards Superboy, but following Superboy's death and resurrection, Lex has severed any emotional ties, calling Superboy "a failed experiment".
Following the events of the War of the Supermen, Lex Luthor has been pardoned by the current President of the United States, and had regained complete control of LexCorp. He, however, has become obsessed with the Lantern Rings, ever since becoming the Orange Lantern during the Blackest Night. He and a robotic Lois Lane now search the world for the rings, particularly the Black Lantern Ring.
Lex managed to locate the Black Lantern power, and along with a Phantom Zone child, became a deity-like entity. He immediately turned his attention to destroying Superman, stating that in doing so would he save humanity. Lex attempted to first demoralize and break Superman emotionally, stating that he was incapable of human emotion. However, Superman proved him wrong by revealing his most painful memory; the death of Jonathan Kent, which resulted in Lex finally discovering Superman's true identity. Lex was then given the option of giving the universe happiness and peace with his new power or to destroy Superman. Lex's ego opted him to destroy Superman, which ironically made him incapable of doing so as the Phantom Zone Child fought against his evil and resulted in Lex losing both his powers and memories. He then vanished abruptly through a mysterious Phantom Zone portal, seemingly forever. His current whereabouts are unknown.
After Flashpoint Lex Luthor is hired by the government to take down Superman. LexCorp also exists. He is hired by General Sam Lane to capture Superman in his early years. He sets up a trap for Superman with a train. Superman barely stops it and is left unconscious. Lex collects him and puts him through a lot of tests and experiments though Superman later manages to escape.

Notes
- Lex has been knocked unconscious more times than any other character on Smallville a total of 49 times as of Season Seven.
- In a technical manner, Lex Luthor was in a way the first meteor freak to appear in the show, after the meteor rocks gave him augmented white blood cells count, a passive ability that killed off his hair follicles leaving him bald.
- In the season finale Vessel, Lex was abducted into the Black Ship, and in a deleted scene in the Fifth Season/Season 5 DVD, he was experimented on by Brainiac in a completely white room inside the ship, making him the first human to be inside a Kryptonian ship, and no one has done it since, making him also the only person to do it.
- Lex only ever directly killed 10 people; Roger Nixon, Morgan Edge, Graham Garrett, Orlando Block, Bronson, Dr. Langston, Adrian Cross, Lionel Luthor, Edward Teague's assassin and Tess Mercer.
- Like his comic counterpart, Lex Luthor has been married many times. The Smallville version married three women, one of them being Lana Lang. The comics noted that Lex has married more than three women some of them being Contessa Erica Alexandra Del Portenza, Alexandra Luthor from Earth One novel, Ardora, an alien from the planet Lexor, Elizabeth Perske, Gertrude Vanderworth from the film Superman Returns. Lois Lane, renamed to Lois Luthor, has also appeared many times as the wife of Lex Luthor but mostly on alternate timelines.
- In the comics Lex has also appeared as a father. Some of the characters that appeared to be his children are Jerry White, his son with Perry White's wife Alice White (née Spencer), Lex Luthor Jr, his son with Ardora, Lena Luthor II, his daughter with his last wife Contessa Erica Alexandra Del Portenza, Lex Luthor Jr./Mr Smith, his disfigured son in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman and Lucinda Luthor (née Walters), his daughter in Batman Beyond Unlimited comic series. Lex's alternate self from Earth-Three had a son Alexander Jr, who was sent in Earth-One before his world's destruction. Moreover Conner Kent/Kon-El also known as Superboy, the clone that was created half of his DNA and half of Superman's DNA appeared in the storyline Titans Tomorrow with Lex as his surrogate father. Alexis Luthor, a descendant of Lex that appeared in the animated TV series Legion of Super-Heroes.
- Lex had 7 main steps in descending to darkness: 1st was his failed childhood life especially by his father Lionel and having no actual friends, 2nd was when he was constantly bullied as a teenager by Oliver and his two friends which meant he had to get stronger so he wouldn't get picked on anymore by anyone, 3rd was his friendship with Clark breaking, 4th was fear of aliens and wanting protection led to his control of 33.1 and destruction of his marriage with Lana, 5th was his failure in achieving the last bit of love by killing his "brother" Grant, 6th was killing his father Lionel, and 7th killing the child within him that represented the last bit of good/light in him led to his embracement in darkness. After embracing the darkness, he became the villain of the story by finding the orb and attempting to destroy Clark and his fortress. 3 years later, he finally fully embraces his destiny along with Clark's, kills his sister Tess, and losing his memories of what made the pain, betrayal and anger as well as his destiny.
- Lex discovers he has an increased white blood cell count, which he speculates might be why he's never been sick since the day he was caught in the first meteor shower.[60]
- Through the years and the many different versions of the character Lex has almost always had in his side a female character who would appear as his henchwoman and most of the time his love interest. These characters are Miss Eve Teschmacher from the live action films Superman as well as Superman II and later in the comics, Katherine "Kitty" Kowalski from the film Superman Returns, Darla from the live action TV series Superboy, Jessica Morganberry from the 1988 Superman animated series, Mercedes "Mercy" Graves from the animated TV series and later in the comics with Hope Taya from the graphic novel Luthor, Mona also from the Luthor novel, his niece Nasthalthia "Nasty" Luthor from the Pre-crisis comics and the All-Star Superman novel, Wanda Nordo and Lois Lane Robot also from the comics. In the new 52, the characters who appear to have that role next to Lex are both robots, Alphina, an octoppus like robot-woman and Aria. The Smallville equivalent of these characters is Tess Mercer.
- Lex Luthor also had some male assistants most notably Otis from Superman films, his nephew Lenny Luthor from the film Superman IV, Sydney Happersen and many others.
- Lex's gun of choice is the nickel plated 9MM baretta.[61]
- Lex has discovered Clark's secret eight times.[62]
- Lex has met every main character except Major Zod.
- Lex has successfully broken up Clark and Lana three times.[63]
- In the recurring theme of a Luthor killing another Luthor, Lex has murdered the most members of his family.[64]
- Lex was an anti-hero during Season One, Season Two, Season Three and Season Four, a supporting antagonist in Season Five, the main antagonist in Season Six and Season Seven, and a minor antagonist in Season Eight and Season Ten.
- Lex Luthor is the third main character (after Clark Kent and Chloe Sullivan) to appear in all ten seasons.[65]
- Although X's identity was never revealed on the show, writer and producer Al Septien revealed that X was Lex in a twitter post: "As Lex ("X") recovered, his people stole it from Tess and he sent it to Clark hoping it would finish him by sending him to PZ." [66] However, it's unclear how Lex's team was able to reprogram the Crystal of Knowledge, a highly advanced piece of Kryptonian technology, to send someone into the Phantom Zone.
- Writers Bryan Q. Miller and Al Septien confirmed that the Lex in Finale, Part 2 and season 11 is composed of the original that was crushed in Arctic and later blown up in Requiem, as well as his failed clones' best pieces.[67][68][69]
- Lex is never shown to meet Superboy despite both characters appearing in Smallville Season 11. Due to his amnesia, Lex would be ignorant as to any relation between the two - and presumably ignorant as to any resemblance between Superboy and his younger self.

- ↑ Although not explicitly stated onscreen, series creator Al Gough told TVGuide.com: "It was a desperate and sad thing for him to do. However, the explanation was given — Lex didn't feel Lana would marry him for himself, so he faked the pregnancy to seal the deal, then stopped drugging her with hormones after the wedding, so she thought she had a miscarriage. Remember, gang, this is one of the reasons he becomes evil, because he is desperate for love that he cannot get from his father or from Lana." [1]
- ↑ Lex killed Lois' profile of him in Gemini.
- ↑ Chloe was unable to access a photograph in Hero and learned that Lex is monitoring her files. They argued about whether Lex had rights to copy her computer files and he told her that she could quit if she didn't like the way he ran the paper.

- ↑ The biggest example of this is in the first few seasons, where he often offers to help Clark (and the Kents) and yet simultaneously secretly searches for the truth about Clark's powers. He spends much of Season 7 in search of Kara's secret as well.
- ↑ In Zero, Lex says, "The truth is, I'd do anything to protect my friends." In Magnetic, he tells Chloe that he will protect her against his father: "I'll protect you, Chloe. You have my word. But in order to do that, I need to know what you found out about my father." In Commencement, he tells Lana (after she killed Genevieve Teague), "Now, I'll do anything I can to protect you including supporting whatever story of self-defense you want to run with."
- ↑ Examples include Clark Kent, Lana Lang, Chloe Sullivan, and Grant Gabriel. He promised to do anything to protect Grant from Lionel, including transfer him to an overseas posting at another newspaper. When Grant refused his help, Lex had him murdered.
- ↑ In Season Seven, Lex recreated this dynamic of publicly offering someone help while secretly investigating them with Kara Kent as after she saved him from drowning in Bizarro, he told her, "Your secret's safe with me. I've already protected you, like I would have protected others close to me if they would have told me the truth. This time, I'm hoping to change all that. I just need you to be honest with me."
- ↑ In Season One, he risked all of his money to save the employees of LexCorp from losing their jobs; he was able to do so, but Lionel blackmailed his board members and he lost his company and wealth. In Season Six, he built an army of super-powered soldiers to protect Earth against aliens and meteor freaks. Or as he put it, "What you're being asked to do is help protect the world; unstable criminals with dangerous powers are becoming more and more common. Humanity's only chance of surviving the onslaught is this project."
- ↑ Lex somewhat realized the effect of Lana's "baby" in Promise, wonders why Kara saved him in Bizarro, acknowledges he was abusive towards Lana in Kara, says he loves Clark like a brother after destroying the Fortress of Solitude in Arctic, and stabbed Tess because he didn't want her to go through what he did in Finale, Part 2.
- ↑ Lex fatally stabbed Tess because (in his mind) it would prevent his "dear little sister" turning into him in Finale, Part 2.
- ↑ By 2018, Lex is elected President, has an economic stimulus plan, and is trying to print or kill stories in Lex's favor at the Daily Planet much to Perry White's dismay.
- ↑ Lionel points this out to Lex in Descent.
- ↑ He states that he has not been sick since the meteor shower in Craving, where he also states that his asthma went away after the meteor shower. He also states that he has never been sick in Extinction. He is seen losing his hair after being caught in the shower in the Pilot and wonders what he would look like with hair in Lockdown, indicating that he is not bald by choice.

- ↑ Lex used it when he shot and killed Roger Nixon to save Clark and Jonathan in Vortex, to shoot Morgan Edge in Shattered, to defend himself from Lionel (in Clark's body) in Transference, to defend himself against Clark in Splinter, used it to shoot Marcus Becker with it in Fade, used it to simultaneously shoot at Oliver in Rage, used it to defend himself against Kal in Crimson, used it shoot at Wes Keenan in Prototype, used it to shoot Curtis Knox six times in Cure, used it to kill Adrian Cross in cold blood in Gemini, used two of them to shoot both Green Arrow and Black Canary at the same time in Siren, used it to shoot at Jacob Finley in Fracture, used it to intimiate Lionel in Descent and shot Clark and Kara (using Kryptonite bullets) in the alternate universe shown in Apocalypse.
- ↑ Lex discovered Clark's secret in Hug but forgot after being influenced by Bob Rickman, Clark dreamed that Lex found out with disastrous results in Slumber, Lex found out again while being saved by Clark from Morgan Edge's car in Shattered but forgot completely due to Lionel's electroshock therapy in Asylum, Lex's evil half discovered Clark's secret in Onyx but was merged together with black kryptonite to the original Lex which had no idea of what his other half did, Lex himself discovered Clark's secret in Reckoning after Lana's death but this was undone when Clark travelled back in time to prevent Lana's death and in Vessel just prior to completely becoming Zod's vessel but completely forgot after Zod's wraith was removed by Clark in Zod. The eighth (and final) time was thanks to Brainiac to which Lex used the knowledge to use the orb to destroy the Fortress of Solitude on him and Clark in Arctic but completely forgot Clark's secret (along with his entire life) thanks to Tess in Finale, Part 2.
- ↑ Hypnotic, Arctic and Requiem
- ↑ Lex personally gunned down Adrian Cross in Gemini, had an assassin kill Grant Gabriel in Persona, pushed Lionel 40 stories to his death in Descent and stabbed Tess in Finale, Part 2.
- ↑ Lex appeared as a series regular portrayed by Michael Rosenbaum in every episode of Season One to Season Seven. Younger versions of the character were portrayed by Matthew Munn in Pilot and Lineage, Wayne Dalglish in Memoria, Lucas Grabeel in Reunion, and Connor Stanhope in Fracture, Veritas, Descent and Eternal. After Rosenbaum left the show, Lex was no longer a series regular and was portrayed by Kevin Miller in Season Eight and Ayron Howey in Season Nine. In Season Ten, Mackenzie Gray made an uncredited cameo as Lex in Lazarus and Rosenbaum returned as the character in Finale, Part 2.
