Julius Schwartz was a Metropolis-based architect. He passed away in 2004.
Early Life[]
Julius Schwartz helped to shape the city of Metropolis.[1] In 1989, Schwartz established the Metropolis Charitable Trust to fund the many causes that he championed.[2]
Season Three[]
Schwartz passed away in the spring of 2004. The city of Metropolis mourned his loss.[2][1]
Season Six[]
When Baern was searching the Daily Planet archives for traces of Kal-El, he came across the 2004 article on Schwartz's passing.[1]
Notes[]
- The character is a reference to longtime DC Comics editor Julius Schwartz. Like the Smallville character carrying his name, the real Julius Schwartz passed away in 2004. The photograph used for the character is of the real Julius Schwartz.
- Julius Schwartz was an avoid comic book collector.[2]
- "Schwartz" is a Jewish last name, indicating that the character might be of Jewish (ethnic) heritage (the real-world Julius Schwartz was indeed Jewish).
In the Comics[]
A character named Julius Schwartz (a 70th birthday surprise for the real Schwartz, made in secret by the DC Comics writers and artists) appears in Superman #411 (September, 1985). The character is an old friend of Perry White. An old agent and writer, who is shown to have discovered Ray Bradbury. The fictional Schwartz had been struck by hard times, and rendered homeless, by his 70th birthday. Schwartz is abducted by a supervillain named Olaf. Superman is able to save him, but Schwartz is dying. At Schwartz's request, Superman takes him to Earth-Prime (where all the superheroes of Earth-One are comic book characters), where Schwartz merges with his Earth-Prime counterpart (an editor at DC Comics)
