- "I wanna be a hero like Booster Gold." - Jaime Reyes, Booster
Jaime Reyes is Blue Beetle, a teenage boy who came upon alien technology in the form of a blue scarab and chose to use his power to fight crime.
Jaime Reyes is a timid, shy boy who, at first, lacked the confidence to stand up for himself. He has a crew cut and is somewhat short. Jaime accidentally stumbled upon alien technology and later merged with it which gave him the ability to transform into an armored being with a beetle like appearance.
His body was automatically covered in a large, bulky, blue and black metallic armor with two beetle-like horns protruding from his back that conduct electricity. His face was completely covered by a menacing looking helmet with glowing yellow eyes. Jaime transformed unwillingly the first time, but thanks to Booster Gold, was able to overcome the scarab and transform back out of his own will power.
Jaime was a mild-mannered adolescent. He was a very shy, timid boy before he was merged with blue scarab. He was often picked on by his peers and he failed to stand up to them. After he was merged with the blue scarab, he became more heroic. He acted in a manner similar to Clark when he attended Smallville High School.
A technology-based, blue beetle crawled inside his backpack and later fused with Jaime, bonding to his body, giving him superhuman powers and abilities. At first, he couldn't control it, instead the armor worked on its own accord. But sometime later, during a conversation he had with his hero - Booster Gold - he managed to take control over the suit.
When the scientists told him that they could take it off his hands, he told them that he wants to keep it so he can use it help people like Booster Gold did, but Booster Gold told him that he didn't need a suit or superpowers to be a hero.
Powers and Abilities
Jaime alone has no superpowers but, while merged with the scarab, develops extraordinary abilities including:
- Energy projection: Jaime could project powerful energy beams from his hands capable of leveling an entire set while he was fused with a piece of alien technology.
- Super strength: Jaime is stronger than Booster Gold as he was able to overpower and put him in a choke hold for an extended amount of time before letting go.
- Enhanced speed: He was able to deflect a blast from Booster Gold and put him in a choke hold before he could land a blow.
- Super durability: Jaime's alien suit armor is durable enough to be blasted 50 feet into the air and land 90 feet away without any damage to Jaime or the suit, but it did cause pain to him.
- Flight: Jaime's armor allows him to fly thanks to a pair of artificial scarab-like-wings. (Argo)
- "You can be a hero. You just have to have faith in who you are and what you're going to be." - Booster Gold to Jaime
Jaime is later seen with his friends and a can of soda explodes in his face. His peers laugh at him and ridicule him. Lois Lane witnessed this and encouraged Jaime to stand up and refuse to be pushed around. However Jaime was still ridiculed. As he walked away, the scarab began to take control of his body in an alley.
He went to Booster Gold for help, but Booster Gold claimed he was too busy. Later on, the blue scarab took full control of Jaime and wreaked havoc among the city. The armor attacked the studio in which Booster Gold was working. Meanwhile, Jaime struggled for control. Eventually, the armor had Booster Gold in a choke hold.
Booster Gold told Jaime the suit didn't make the hero and encouraged him to take control. Jaime overtook the scarab and took control of the suit. Jaime talked with Lois and Ted Kord about the scarab. Ted said they could remove it, but Jaime refused saying he wanted to learn to use its power and become a hero like Booster. Later, Booster Gold decided to take Jaime as his protege after a talk with Clark and asked Lois to interview Jaime.
Season ElevenIn Antarctica, employees of WayneTech, Kord Industries, as well as Michael Holt's company working on the Super Collider are running from something, when Skeets arrives to announce Booster Gold, leading to the employees to admit they would rather have Kord's kid with the bug on his back. As they bicker, a huge monster is about to attack them. Booster proceeds to attack it but his Legion ring fails to work because it detects no authorized user. As the monster is about to kill him, Blue Beetle arrives and proceeds to scare it off. Beetle then checks to see if everyone is all right, leading Booster to shrug him off. Then Beetle and Skeets have a conversation of their own.
A file on Blue Beetle is also seen in Watchtower implying that he might be a member of the League.
When Doctor Phosphorus escapes from prison, Superboy appears and engages into a fight with him. When Phosphorus sets a Ferris wheel on fire, Megan Morse, Blue Beetle, Speedy, Zan and Jayna, who along with Superboy are all members of Jay Garrick's team, surprisingly appear and Megan says he must go and save the kids on the wheel and leave Phosphorus to them.
Blue Beetle fights with Phosphorus with the Scarab saying to Jaime that their opponent is made on fire. Speedy asks from Blue Beetle to get clear and she then shoots at Phosphorus two arrows with fire-fighting foam to suppress his fire but Phosphorus proves that the foam cannot stop him, saying that he can run hotter than that.
Some seconds later, Speedy, Blue Beetle and Jayna combine their abilities to defeat Phosphorus and knock him into the water. After the fight Jay appears saying that they actually failed on their mission, making them feel very disappointed about themselves. Garrick then tells them to return to the school.
At the team's headquarters Garrick talks to his students a little bit about Bart Allen's life, how Bart was the inspiration for the creation of the team and the Titan Corporation, which funded the school. He tells them he is very disappointed about their first mission and he is not sure if they ever will be ready for field work. Mia says that they couldn't just sit there and do nothing while Phosphorus was causing havoc and Conner says that Garrick is not fair with them. Jayna and Zan also say that they had to stop him but Jaime says that Garrick has got a point. Megan says that the discord is clouding her mind but Garrick tells her to toughen up. Garrick then informs them that the D.E.O. wrangled Phosphorus back to prison and that they would probably succeed stopping him themselves, without the team's interference. Conner asks if he knows how Phosphorus escaped in the first place but Garrick says it's not their problem and if they make some more mistakes like this one it won't be even possible for Superman to convince the public that this team should not be locked away, too.
Later, after arguing with the Scarab about how many times he has to brush his teeth, Jaime enters his room, telling to his roommate, Zan that he is going to skype with a friend of his but he slides on some blood that there is on the floor and sees him severely wounded. Jaime immediately turns on his armor but before he can transform an unknown woman, who was behind the door, attacks him with some kind of sonic waves and wonders if the Blue Beetle will be more cooperative than Zan.
Inside Jaime and Zan's room, the woman reveals that she is Slade Wilson' s daughter and that the reason she is attacking them is because of her father, she is continuing his task, which was to stop and imprison the vigilantes. Jaime asks her what that has to do with them and she tells him that her father tried to stop the next generation of heroes from rising into power and now she makes sure that they will "die in the crib". Jaime asks her how she knew where to find them and she says that Stargirl went door to door, selling cookies and subscriptions for the team and one of the houses she visited was actually hers. She also implied that she might had hurt Courtney. Then she asks him why would he want to join this team but Jaime replies to her by asking why she doesn't just kill him and she says that he and Zan were just practice for her.
Jayna finds her brother hurt but she realises he is not yet dead because he has a pulse even though its very weak. She then tells to Jaime to armor up so he can either help the others in their battle against their attacker or fly Zan to S.T.A.R. branch at Berkley. Jaime reveals then that he can't because Rose has placed a bomb on his scarab.
Later, Rose threatens the rest of the team to stand down or she will kill their teammates by detonating the bomb Jaime has on his back. Conner tells her if she wants a real fight she should confront him and leave the rest of his team out of this.
Jayna tries to keep the wounded Zan awake, telling him not to die on her, but Jaime tries to calm her down by saying she needs to take a step back and focus. Jaime says that Zan needs to activate his powers but Jayna is not sure if he can activate in his condition. Then Jaime asks her if Zan can still transform into ice so he would stop bleeding out until he gets into a hospital.
After Rose has been defeated and arrested by D.E.O., Zan, who has been transformed into an ice man, along with Jaime appear being on top of a huge pink dinosaur, in which Jayna has been transformed. Watching them the team shouts to the D.E.O.'s soldiers that the dinosaur is with them.
Weeks later, Zatanna turns a young girl, named Rachel Roth, over to Jay Garrick and the Teen Titans at the airport, with the team being very excited for their new teammate.
Jaime is awoken by the Scarab, which informs him about an alien threat but neither the Scarab nor the Titans know what exactly it is. He and the others observe, while the rings approach their base, and even one of the rings identify one of them, Megan, as a potential harvester but she is deemed incompatible by the ring, which then moves on in search of another host. After that, Conner says they need to get Watchtower on the line immediately.
Weeks later, Superman and Lois arrive at Watchtower where Tess Mercer, Chloe and Oliver along with Batman, Nightwing Martian Manhunter, Supergirl, Jay Garrick and his team of teenagers. Clark tells Chloe, Tess and Bruce to find out everything from one of the Manhunters he destroyed about the Crisis, because more ships are on their way. As Batman starts to examine the crumpled Manhunter head he wonders where are they going, Clark grimly says everywhere.
The next day, Clark gathers all of the heroes onto his rooftop and gives them the lowdown. They can distract the Manhunters with physical attacks while Watchtower leads an evacuation to the heartland. If the distraction they provide fails everyone will die or be 'rebooted', but if they win everything will stay as it was and how they all remember the world. Clark tells them to say goodbye to their loved ones and suit up ready for war.
Superman delivers a rousing speech to the heroes. The other Earths might have been erased or rebooted but they are determined for their Earth to survive and their continuity to continue. With that Superman, Luthor and all of Earth's heroes attack the incoming Manhunters.
The Monitors automatons suddenly change direction and race to reboot Smallville and if they succeed everything will be lost. Superboy has gathered all of the youngest of heroes and they prepare to stop the tide. Superman orders him to stand down but another team arrives to help, the Legion. With the Legions arrival as back up the Titans with Superman's blessing rush to stop the reboot in Smallville.
Three weeks later LexCorp holds a major press confrence and Lex introduces the public to a new monument built on the former Watchtower site. In a massive turnout Lex publicly admits that if it weren't for the heroes of earth the universe would be lost. Then Superman makes a speech that is broadcast all over the world. The Teen Titans are also watching the reveal, in their new base.
After her son's birth, Chloe worries about the dangers in the world and the rise in heroes. Oliver reminds her they all fight for justice and will ensure their new baby will have a safe and healthy upbringing. Chloe laments that family should be here for their big occasion and Ollie smiles as he wheels her into the waiting room to be greeted by their 'family' composed of the Heroes that they met over time.

In the Comics
Jaime Reyes was a relatively normal high school student from El Paso, Texas. His father ran a garage, his mother was a paramedic and his little sister was a brat. Jaime hung out with his two best friends Brenda and Paco, the mediator between the hard-working Brenda and the laid-back Paco. By both Brenda and Paco's accounts, he was a good friend, the kind of person who could let them be themselves and who could always make things better. Jaime aimed to help his father out at the garage, but Alberto turned him down, not wanting to see his son grow up too fast.
Everything fell apart with the onset of the Infinite Crisis.
Some while before, Ted Kord, the second Blue Beetle, had come into possession of the Blue Beetle Scarab, the artifact which had given Dan Garrett, the first Blue Beetle, his powers. The Scarab had been presumed destroyed early in Ted's superhero career, but it was discovered intact in a pyramid in the Middle East. Ted lost the Scarab on a visit to the Rock of Eternity, home of the wizard Shazam. Shortly afterwards, he met his death at the hands of Maxwell Lord, Black King of Checkmate.
The Rock of Eternity was later destroyed in mystical battle between Shazam and the Spectre, its contents blasted across the world. The Blue Beetle Scarab came down in El Paso, fire and portent in its wake.
Jaime discovered the Scarab on the way home from school with Paco and Brenda, half-buried in a disused lot. He took it home, curious as to what it might be. That night, the Scarab came alive and grafted itself to the base of Jaime's spine, inducing strange dreams in Jaime.
He also got in trouble with a local gang of magic meta humans called the Posse Mistaken him for a magic meta human they magically scanned him and invited him to join. Jaime declined the offer but the Scarab had no intentioned to be scanned and it almost killed Probe. And easily bested the rest of the Posse.
The next night Booster Gold sought Jaime out and took him to meet Batman. Booster had been to the future, where he had learned that Batman would seek out Brother Eye and fail - but he had also learned the Blue Beetle Scarab was the one thing capable of seeing Brother Eye.
Jaime went into space with Batman and his team. The Scarab saw where Brother Eye was hidden and pulled the rogue satellite back into reality. Jaime, together with Black Canary and Green Arrow, destroyed Brother Eye's dimensional stabilizer, preventing it from escaping outside reality again. Once Batman's team had sent Eye plummeting Earthwards, the Scarab shunted Jaime outside dimensions itself, seeking to escape the Green Lanterns on the spaceship.
Unfortunately, the chaos of the dimensional stabilizer's destruction dilated time for Jaime. As far as he knew, he'd only been outside dimensions a couple of minutes: on Earth, however, a whole year had passed.
The next thing Jaime remembered, he had come down in the desert outside El Paso and Guy Gardner was trying to kill him. Once Guy realized he was fighting a kid, he broke off the fight, but not without promising Jaime he would be back.
Jaime eventually managed to find his way back home, only to discover his year-long absence. In that time, his father had been crippled, forcing him to walk with a cane, Paco had teamed up with the Posse and Brenda had been taken in by her aunt after her abusive father died in a DUI. He revealed his identity as the Blue Beetle to both his family and his two friends; while his father and friends were understanding, his mother became suspicious and disbelieving that he was really Jaime, and his sister Milagro became terrified of him. It wasn't until Jaime returned to the scene of his rearrival and recalled the memories of what had happened that the two finally reconnected with and accepted him.
Jaime's attempts to learn more about the Scarab led him to the Posse - and involved him in their conflict with El Paso's resident crime lord, La Dama, as she sought to bring the magical metas of El Paso under her control.
Her henchman Diviner even got so far in manipulating The Bottom Feeder to adduct the baby daughter of the Posse leader Damper, Alina Jaime fought to save the baby, discovering he could permanently slay the Bottom Feeder but despite of the Bottom Feeders own wishes he refused as Jaime was not a murderer.
After that, Jaime and the Posse launched a raid on Warehouse 13 where La Dama was holding her collection of magic-metas, only to find most of them were happy where they were. However, the Posse managed to convince a good half of them that they could return to their ordinary lives, promising the Blue Beetle would defend them. La Dama had no choice but to accept this, or risk facing her guests' 'objections'. Jaime and La Dama made a reluctant truce - both knew the other's secret identity and could make it public whenever they chose.
Jaime initially believed the Scarab was a mystical artifact, up until Peacemaker arrived, revealing that it was a piece of extraterrestrial technology. Jaime's search for more information took him back to where he'd crash landed in the desert, in an attempt to find out about his missing year. He then headed out on Dan Garrett's trail, looking to find out what the first Blue Beetle had known about the Scarab. The current Dan Garret was the original Blue Beetles granddaughter and claimed she had the right of the scarab, but since it was stuck to Jaime's spine she let it go.
However, it was Jaime's investigation into a cattle mutilation outside El Paso that would provide his biggest lead on the Scarab. His confrontation with the monstrous creation responsible led him to the Reach, the alien civilization who had created the Scarab and left it on Earth.
Jaime discovered that the Reach were galactic conquerors, who planned to add Earth to their list of conquests. Initially, the Scarab had been programmed to be obedient to the Reach and to subordinate its host's will to them as well. The Reach had intended to present the Scarab's host as Earth's protector, before moving to establish their influence over the planet.
However, during the centuries the Scarab had spent on Earth, it had been infused with magic, the magical 'corruption' preventing the Reach from controlling it. With Jaime's assistance, it had started to develop free will and independence, overriding the Reach's deepest programming.
Nevertheless, the Reach still intended to take over the planet, even without the Scarab to help them. As far as the rest of the world was concerned, the Reach were peaceful 'galactic traders'. Their secret bases and technology were hidden away, out of phase with the rest of the world and Jaime was the only one who could see them.
Seeing Jaime and the Scarab as the biggest threat to their plans, the Reach attempted to eliminate them through the use of deniable agents, including Earth's supervillains. Jaime, meanwhile, tried to find out what the Reach were up to and how he could stop them.
Worried that the Scarab might still be a threat, Jaime sought help from the local branch of S.T.A.R. Labs. An encounter with Livewire, who was being assessed there at the time, triggered a strange reaction in both Livewire and the Scarab, resulting in a fight. Superman put a halt to the battle and helped to reassure Jaime about himself and the Scarab.
Jaime also assisted Traci Thirteen in foiling Eclipso's attempt to kidnap a baby with great magical potential and use it as a new, uncorrupted host. During the course of the adventure, Jaime and Traci developed a romantic interest in each other and remained in long-distance contact after Eclipso' defeat.
When the Reach recruited Lobo to prevent the launch of a rocket containing anti-Reach technology, Jaime teamed up with the Teen Titans to make sure the rocket lifted off safely. Afterwards, the Titans invited Jaime to Titans Tower, so he could hang out with them, get training and learn how to fight. Jaime took them up on the invitation - and found himself helping the Titans fight off their future incarnations, the Titans of Tomorrow.
Finally, Jaime and the Scarab managed to uncover the Reach's scheme and destroy it, but also ended up destroying any evidence of the scheme,
By this point, the Scarab had become an independent, free-willed entity in its own right, naming itself Khaji Da. Together, Jaime and the Scarab devised a plan to bring the Reach down before they tried conquering Earth again.
Jaime allowed himself to be captured by the Reach, giving the Scarab the chance to hack into the Reach's computers and broadcast their invasion plans worldwide. The Reach's Negotiator, driven to breaking point, ordered Earth's destruction - but again, Jaime and the Scarab intervened, stopping the world-rippers before they could be activated.
The Reach were forced to withdraw, claiming that the Negotiator had 'gone rogue'. The Scarab, however, had had a conversation with the other Scarabs on board the Reach ship - a little surprise for the Reach. Jaime is next seen with a man dog creature who was battling another man for the name Hell Hound. He tried to convince both of them to take other names and quit there fighting. The two didn't and attacked Jaime. He quickly dispatched them both. Flying away he came to the border where Peacemaker was fighting a group of super powered criminals. When he arrived they took a hostage. Jaime had to call of Peacemaker to save her but the kidnapper threw her off the side of the cliff. Jaime saved her but the group had run away when he tried to use the Beetle to track them he found out there was to much interference. The girl he saved ended up needing a place to stay and ended up staying with Paco and his family.
The events of Flashpoint greatly affected Jaime's origin and how he got the Scarab. The scarab was the subject of a fight between Tia Amparo and the Brotherhood of Evil. Jaime and Paco just happened by and the Scarab attached itself to Jaime, transforming him into the Blue Beetle.
Booster Gold invites Beetle to join the Justice League International alongside the Olympian. Beetle mistakenly thinks this is the regular Justice League, as he needs help from Cyborg. They're attacked by Brother Eye controlling OMAC and Eye has Beetle teleported to the Reach homeworld while he destroys the team.
- Jaime is the fifth member of the Teen Titans from the comics to appear in Smallville, the first four being Bart Allen, Victor Stone, Mia Dearden, as well as Conner Kent.
- In the comics, two people hold the mantle of Blue Beetle before Jaime. In the Smallville universe, Dan Garrett is a researcher at Kord Industries who briefly bonds to the scarab, kills three people, then dies when the scarab is removed. Ted Kord is the CEO of Kord Industries, which "owns" the scarab device, but Ted does not bond to it himself.
- Jaime's name is pronounced as "Haime", being that he is of Hispanic descent.
- Jaime is the only "guest hero" never to discover Clark's secret on-screen.
- In the comics, while the Scarab has a habit of doing making Jaime do things without his approval, the Scarab never does it out of malicious intent. Instead the relationship it shares with Jaime is primarily a friendly one, although at times annoying on both parts.
- In the comics. Jamie's suit is slimmer and is shown to have an opening for his mouth unlike the show where it is bulkier and the face is completely closed.
