- "Higher beings. You can call them "gods" if you like."
- — Felix Faust to Clark Kent, Olympus
Gods or Deities are higher beings in religious pantheons and worshipped by humans through sacrifices and praying.
Background[]
Over the years, the show established a number of religions (including Christianity,[1] Judaism,[2] Islam,[3] Hinduism,[4] Buddhism[5], and Native American mythology[6]), with deities from Egyptian and Greek religions even appearing onscreen, confirming the existence of the deities from those religions[7][8] However, the origin for all of these beings is unknown. Different religions have their own creation story. In the Abrahamic religions, the Abrahamic God created the universe.[9]
In a priest's notebook on the Nicodemus flower, it said it was the most dangerous plant of God's green Earth. To make analogy to Lex's destiny, Lionel said Prometheus was immortal couldn't escape the world of the gods no matter how hard he tried. Edgar said the Stone of Water was found inside the mask of a Mayan Rain god. Isobel called the Kryptonian Visitor a god and that he hid the Stones of Power on Earth for his return. Down in the under ground tunnels, Lex told his dad not to worry that he wasn't ready to take on the Underworld just yet. Chloe wanted to nullify her empathic healing power with Dr. Knox's procedure and said the mere mortals below Mount Olympus have better things to do than look for Clark's crystal. Lana named Isis Foundation after the goddess Isis. Chloe said God probably felt similar to Clark when people killed each other in His name.
John Jones said that Jor-El knew he was sending Clark on impossible odyssey to be given the powers of a god and exist among humans. Davis Bloome asked God the Father for forgiveness for his sins through confession to the Priest as the intermediary. Chloe begged Clark to put on the Legion Ring to go back in time to save Jimmy and Clark said last time he played God his father died. The towns people thought God was punishing them by striking their village with meteor shower so to make amends the elder sacrificed to his daughter to God. Darkseid over the centuries went by the name Lucifer, Kali, and Hades.

Notes[]
- A Kryptonian Visitor was once mistaken by ancient humans for a god, because of his powers.[15]
- Season Eleven introduces Eclipso, who claims to be the wrath of God (specifically, the Abrahamic one). A flashback, however, establishes Eclipso as originally having been a meteorite found by the Mayans, who worshiped it as a deity. When the Conquistadors conquered the Mayans, and introduced Christianity, Eclipso was radicalized by the new religion.[16]
- Like in the comics, many pantheons of gods are shown to exist in the universe of Smallville,[7][8] along with a numerous religions.[7][8][1][2][3][4][5][6][14] There are also shown to exist multiple afterlives, for different religions.[7][8][17][18] The show refrained from ever singling one out as the one true religion, likely avoiding controversy. The Marvel Cinematic Universe would later frame gods like Thor and the rest of the Asgardians, as having just been aliens mistaken for gods by ancient man. This led to an episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., where a character speculates that gods from other religions were also just aliens, singling out the Hindu god Vishnu. This sparked a controversy (Hinduism being the world's oldest and third largest religion), where a Hindu group demanded an apology from the ABC network.[19]
- According to Clark Kent, there is no Kryptonian word for "church" (a building for Christian religious activities),[20] indicating that Christianity did not exist on Krypton. This is supported by the fact that the Kandorian army worshiped Rao, a Kryptonian deity,[14] as opposed to the Abrahamic God.
Trivia[]
- In TV shows and movies, which in this case is movies, such as Superman Returns and Man of Steel, Superman is told by Jor-El (in both cases) that he will be like a god and god amongst men.

- Kryptonians have been said to have god-like power, and so are sometimes referred to as gods. And in the episode Lara, Lara-El said Jonathan and Martha were at church, indicating that they are Christian or Protestant, believers in the Abrahamic God.[1]

In the Comics[]
Once upon a time, there were an ancient race called the Old Gods of the First World. The destruction of them and their homeworld unleashed the Godwave, created by the Source (of all that exists). The wave swept across the universe, leaving a divine seed at every place that it touched. This caused the creation of the various gods of different planets (it also created things like the Speed Force). One of the planets most affected by the Godwave was Earth, resulting in the planet's numerous deities.
