"When it comes to affairs of the heart, everyone uses secrets and lies to protect the ones they love." - Emil Hamilton, Injustice

Emil Hamilton, M.D. is a doctor who works part-time at Metropolis General Hospital, but he spends most of his time working with Queen Industries and the Justice League, which includes advising Chloe Sullivan at the Watchtower.

Physical Appearance[]

Emil Hamilton Smallville

Emil Hamilton

He appears to be in his mid 30s and of mediterrenean descent.

Personality[]

Dr. Hamilton is mainly loyal to Oliver Queen, but he also professes allegiance towards the rest of the Justice League. When Oliver's judgment appears questionable, he relies on other people.[1] He is very serious, introverted and considerably more private than the rest of the team. He is however deeply compassionate and kind hearted beneath it all and is an unfailingly loyal friend and ally. He is also near completely unshakeable and never seems bothered by the bizarre things he often encounters. Emil is also an excellent singer but lost his passion for it after his wife died.

Powers and Abilities[]

As a human, Emil possesses no inhuman abilities.

Emil has an extensive understanding of science, math, astrology, and is extremely dexterous even by doctor standards. He has operated on John Jones, a martian (Bulletproof), and examined Davis (Beast) and Clark's (Rabid) biology. Emil was able to refabricate Clark's decimated Mirror box. (Kent)

Season Eight[]

Dr. Emil meets Chloe to talk about Davis Bloome.

Chloe met with Emil Hamilton to ask of him to find a cure for Davis Bloome. She gives him a sample of Davis's saliva and Emil, although doubtful, says he'll try. But all he could tell her was that his nuclei are in a constant state of mutation and when he tried to destroy a cell, it had become stronger. Emil further mentions that serious body changes can be triggered by strong emotions such as love and hate, and tells Chloe that Davis is dangerous and control rests in her hands. Oliver called for him to ask him to help Jimmy after Davis attacked.

821Smallville0353

Emil investigates an attack from Doomsday.

Hamilton alerted Clark about Doomsday striking again, finding the slaughtered metahuman Neutron and his friend Livewire. Emil explained to Clark about the deaths and the possibility of Tess being a murderer and also informed him that Chloe came to him looking for a cure for Davis. When Clark lost the use of his powers to Parasite, Hamilton equipped Clark with a fast, high-tech car to use to travel to Smallville to save Tess.

Season Nine[]

Emil at Chloe's new Watchtower.

Emil came to see Chloe at the Watchtower where she was trying to find Lois Lane after she disappeared. Chloe wondered if Oliver sent him but he said that they have all gone missing. Chloe said she already knew and that the world would be better if the Justice League was reformed and that she would bring those heroes home, including Clark. Emil noted that Clark was doing well without Chloe's help. When Chloe later came back to the Watchtower, it was filled with the latest hi-tech equipment with Emil at the control. He said that Oliver may be missing, but his funds weren't and that Chloe is right.

902Smallville0325

Emil is shocked by Corben's bionics parts

Emil was at Metropolis General Hospital when John Corben came into A&E with his kryptonite heart and bio-mechanics. When John became disillusioned, he defended himself knocking the doctors out of his way including Emil. When Clark heard the report over the Police scanner, he arrived at Met Gen where Emil told him what happened and when Emil noted his kryptonite heart and bio-mechanics, he gave Clark an EMP grenade so he doesn't have to go near John.

909Smallville0951

Emil examining Clark

Emil arrived at Watchtower where he met Chloe and told her that they shouldn't have secrets when she turned the screen off at his entrance. Clark arrived with news of the virus outbreak and Emil hypothesized that the virus is affecting the rage part of the brain. Clark then super sped Emil to Met Gen where they talked with Dr. Coats who is handling the virus patients who said that the virus is airborne. Emil made it back to Watchtower after looking over the virus components and said that they matched Davis Bloome's blood type and that to make an antidote, they would need a match. Clark then arrived and revealed his alien origin and then a blood sample was taken from Clark using a kryptonite soaked needle.

Emil confronts Chloe.

Emil and Chloe then left Clark to go administer the antidote. They got in Oliver's jet and flew above Metropolis spraying the clouds so it mixed with the rain. Emil then wondered why Chloe was betraying Oliver by tracking him and the Justice League but Chloe said it was to protect them.

When Clark was connected with Lois' mind, Emil wanted to pull him but Chloe stopped him, saying that Lois could have answers Clark would need to save the world. After Clark disconnected from her, Emil erased Lois' memories of the future.

911Smallville0331

Emil investigating Sandman's body.

When Clark found the body of Wesley Dodds, Emil examined him and reported to Chloe that he had died the same way Pemberton did: with ice by a metahuman. After finding out about Doctor Fate and John Jones, Emil found them and placed John in a private room. When Clark and Courtney Whitmore arrived, he explained that John was undergoing some kind of incubation.

Persuasion 275

Emil taking a break

When Clark went to Watchtower to find Chloe, he found a panicking Emil trying to break through Chloe's firewalls. Clark told him to relax and because of his new power, Emil loosened out and grabbed himself a beer, not really caring about what was really going on. After Clark was cured, Emil presumably went back to normal like Chloe, Lois and Clark. He later operated on Oliver after he was severely injured during a confrontation with Major Zod.

Season Ten[]

Smallvilles10e0101

When Lois Lane tries to locate Clark with news that she gained on Slade Wilson, she located Emil at the hospital and threatens to cut his throat if he doesn't spill the information. Emil directs her to Florida where Clark is visiting Arthur Curry and his wife Mera. Satisfied, Lois smiling reminds him that she was bluffing about cutting his throat, and a bemused Emil is left in her wake.

SV1011-1086

Emil is questioned for his work with the League

When Clark and Lois got engaged, Emil attended their engagement party. Later, Emil was brought in for questioning by government agents about his work for Oliver Queen and his team of vigilantes. He refused to indulge any information about them, so he and Tess Mercer were taken to a warehouse, presumably to be executed, but luckily, they both were rescued by Clark.

S10ep15-0207

Emil and Tess sing together.

Emil attended Clark and Lois's party at the Kent farm where he was the videographer for the night. He and the rest of the group drank from an enchanted bottle of champagne which caused them to become amazingly drunk and wild. Emil somehow ended up signing karaoke at the Ace of Clubs dressed as an Elvis impersonator, along with Tess. He quickly became famous enough to have t-shirts with his name and picture on them. There, he was taken into custody by the "police" for supposedly stealing an armored truck filled with money.

S10ep15-0399

Emil is beaten for information

He was taken to the Fortune Casino, where it was revealed that the police were actually the henchmen of Amos Fortune, owner of the casino, and that the money belonged to him. Emil was brutally beaten for the whereabouts of the truck, but couldn't remember due to the spell put on the champagne. Amos got fed up with him and ordered his men to torture him further, putting his head in a vice grip. Luckily, Clark arrived and saved him. When the video of the night was found by Lois, the group sat down to watch it, where it was revealed, much to both their embarrassments, that in their drunken stupor, Emil had slept with Tess in her office at the Daily Planet.

S10e17-9rs23

Emil attempts to repair the mirror box

Emil was called to the farm by Lois to help her fix the broken mirror box so they could get Clark Kent back from Earth-2 after he was sent there by Clark Luthor. After many unsuccessful tries, he managed to finally fix it, returning Clark to their world. Emil and Tess later met and he revealed to her Gold kryptonite's existence and its ability to remove Clark's powers permanently.

In S.T.A.R. Labs, Lois visits Emil, in order to check on Commander Henshaw, who is being watched over by his wife. Emil explains to Lois that Henshaw is not in a coma, but has lost all motor skills due to the radiation, but is fully aware. Lois attempts to comfort Mrs. Henshaw, but she angrily blames Superman for what happened, despite knowing Henshaw's decision. Lois apologizes for the incident, but Mrs. Henshaw dismisses her attempts and leaves.

In S.T.A.R. Labs, Emil attempts to comfort Mrs. Henshaw as she mourns her husband's condition, when Lex walks in. Emil alerts him that he does not have clearance to enter, but Lex dismisses his protest. He offers to help save Commander Henshaw but says he requires one of Emil's H.E.D drones.

Emil asks Terri to come into the operating room as her husband wants her, but is kicked out by Lex's security guards. Hank's robotic body goes online, and his wife tries to comfort him as he begins to grieve his condition. Lex congratulates him on his second chance, but Hank angrily grabs him and lifts him into the air, asking why Lex did it. Emil quickly reaches for and activates his signal watch.

Hank is causing trouble at STAR Labs; he is angry that he is now a robot. However, Superman gets Hank to come to his senses, and Hank goes to sleep.

Due to Lex's capability to track Superman's location anywhere on Earth, Clark can't return to his life as Clark Kent and must remain Superman for the time being due to Lex's irradiation ploy, leading he and Lois not being able to see each other for weeks. While Emil is trying to figure out about the destruction of Earth-2, he is also trying to help solve Clark's dilemma. Research from S.T.A.R. Labs has revealed that his healing ability from the rays of the sun is slowly curing the radiation. But Emil isn't sure they could stop the process from eventually turn him into raw energy if he tried to fly into the sun to speed up the process and burn the rest of it away. He is close to accessing the black box from the late Earth-2 Chloe's space ship which he calls to inform Chloe.

At S.T.A.R. Labs, Emil meets with his staff to discuss two problems before them: one, assisting Superman in finding a way to help Impulse with the dark creature; and two, aiding Watchtower in retrieving the technology that LexCorp used to transfer Hank Henshaw's consciousness from his charred and crippled body into one of the H.E.D. drones. Emil states he will address the technology issue and assigns the others to Impulse's case. The scientists at S.T.A.R. Labs set Bart and Clark up for a speed assessment. As Bart chats up a lovely blonde scientist, Emil asks Clark how he's able to be so jovial. Clark answers that Bart probably welcomes any distraction from being chased by the creature as long as he has. With everything set, Bart wonders how Clark will manage to match his speed, considering he runs a lot faster than Clark. Emil explains that the treadmills they are using for the assessment had been specially designed with a frictionless engine assembly when they began testing Clark's abilities. This will allow Bart to run as fast as he can while Clark's treadmill will accelerate him towards Bart's speed. They all hope that if they can get Clark fast enough, he can witness the creature as well.

As they run, Clark encourages Bart to go full speed, insisting that he has his friend's back. With approval, Bart taps into the Speed Force and runs so fast that he causes the treadmill and the monitoring equipment to explode. As Clark falls to the floor, while in the Speed Force, the horrible creature towers over him, chastising his speed as "not pure." Outside of the force, Bart asks Clark if he was able to see the demon. Now knowing what he is dealing with, Clark assures his friend that he will find a way to save him.

Oliver and Emil discussing the implications of the experiment.

Later on, Oliver and Emil chat about the accident that happened in the speed assessment lab with Bart and Clark. They make their way into another lab and Emil reveals that they were able to place Chloe's dead doppelganger in cryogenic freeze using technology Clark confiscated when he and the Batman captured Mr. Freeze. Naturally worried, Oliver asks if the plan will work and if they'll even be able to access her memories.

Emil posits that Chloe might only be able to access the other's most recent accessed memories given how long she's been dead. Oliver guesses this to mean the flashes of her life before her eyes just prior to dying. Looking for assurance, Emil is only able to admit that with the technology and the similar biochemistries of the two Chloes, he's making educated guesses as they're going along. Oliver asks if the baby will be affected by the procedure and Emil says that unless there are psychosomatic effects caused by the mental link, the baby should be fine.

Meanwhile, Emil places Chloe inside the Project Intercept apparatus to begin the "mind dive" procedure. Oliver asks one more time if she's sure about doing this. Mentioning that she's "been possessed by a witch, rewired by a Kryptonian computer, and mind controlled more times" than she can count, Chloe assures him that she's prepared for what she is about to do. Emil starts the link and Chloe is instantly transported into the memories of her counterpart.

On Earth-2, the counterpart's cousin, Lois Queen, runs toward her amidst a scene of rubble and destruction. The alternate Lois screams to Chloe to get to her space ship. Just then, a particle beam from a monstrous ship flying overhead shoots down and vaporizes the Earth-2 Lois. Both her counterpart and Chloe scream in horror.

Clark fields communication from Chloe at Watchtower. Clark tells Chloe that they didn't come up with a solution about the Speed monster. She responds that S.T.A.R. Labs might have something. Patched to Emil Hamilton, the doctor explains they took the concept of sending Clark into the sun to remove his irradiation to fashion a containment suit. He states that they modified the suit to collect speed energy and that Clark might be able to use it to constantly move fast enough to confront the demon.

The scientists at S.T.A.R. fire a pod into the atmosphere and it quickly rockets its way to the young heroes' location in Utah. The pod opens to reveal the new suit, a black and silver affair with a glowing S-Shield.

Weeks later and while regaining his strength from his fight with the Monitor, Superman communicates with Emil and Tess at the Watchtower, who explain to him why they believe the Monitor can hurt him without the help of any kind of kryptonite or red solar radiation. They say that the Monitors are beings outside the laws governing their universe, their energy is not governed by the physical laws of our own, which also makes Superman vulnerable to their attacks. Emil tells Clark to seek help from Supergirl but he refuses because as he says if the Monitor can hurt him, he can hurt Kara too.

In a D.E.O. quarantine zone, Emil performs an autopsy on the Monitor's body, while Director Steve Trevor observes. At the same time, Agent Diana Prince examines the Monitor's equipment and informs Trevor that an item is missing. This apparent comms device which was present at the scene, was somehow lost and nobody knows where it might have gone.

A relieved Clark finally is able to remove it and throw it into the atmosphere where Emil begins to track it. As he does the ring makes a U-Turn back to Earth to Clark's finger which Clark flies to catch. Clark then hears a loud siren coming from Metropolis National Bank where he goes to intervene, telling Lois to inform Emil that they should worry about his wardrobe change later.

Emil explains to Clark and John Stewart how their rings function.

At S.T.A.R. Labs, John Stewart says he doesn't know a lot about his power ring even though he has been wearing it for a decade. Emil explains that the ring enables the user to tap into power from beneath the fabric of reality and that the mind tells the ring how to filter and implement this power. Furthermore, the energy is traceable and acts as a locator. Suddenly, an employee of the lab says to Emil that a signal was detected similar to the one of the ring outside of the facility. John says he hasn't invited anyone from the Green Lantern Corps there, so he and Clark change back to their Lantern costumes and go to check what is going on. Much to their surprise they find an army of Manhunters waiting outside.

Smallville - Lantern 008-013

Emil informs Superman about the yellow rings.

Soon after, Superman sends a distress signal for all available Lanterns, informing them of the situation with Parallax and the yellow rings. Emil and his fellow scientists receive his message and inform him that the yellow rings have landed in Gotham City, specifically at Arkham Asylum.

Smallville - Lantern 010-008

Emil has an idea on how to stop the Yellow Lanterns.

Tess and Chloe contact Emil Hamilton at S.T.A.R. Labs, who informs them that unlike the green rings, the yellow rings actually control the people wielding them. Emil takes that notion a step further and determines that the ring may also share a single communication frequency and if they could isolate the communication channel, as they did with Superman's ring, maybe they could interfere.

After taking a yellow ring and analyzes it, Batman sends the data to Watchtower and S.T.A.R. Labs. Later Superman tells Emil to reboot the rings and when he does all the Yellow Lanterns are released from the influence of fear and lose their powers with the rings turning black.

Smallville Chaos 02 1402694379403

Emil finds some worrying information about the black gem.

Dr. Hamilton's team have completed their analysis of the shattered black diamond. It seems the gem gives off a unique pattern of Alpha brainwaves that influence the mind of the one in contact with the gem. Moreover, every shard of the gem is emitting its own series of signals, which are talking to each other. Disturbingly, not every shard of the diamond is accounted for. Emil then tells them to call the C.D.C. and scramble a team back to the crime scene so they can prevent anyone else from getting infected.

Tess contacts Emil to inform him about the effect of Eclipso that is spreading all over the city. Emil tells her that he is already aware of the situation as possessed citizens are attacking S.T.A.R. Labs, at the same time. Suddenly their link is terminated and Tess loses contact with Emil.

Empire-Smallville - Chaos 005-004

Emil talks with his fellow scientists on what to do next.

Emil and his team of scientists are hiding from the army of the civilians possessed by Eclipso, who continue the assault on the facility and also are trying to produce a synthetic version of the gem so they can "spread his wrath". Emil discuss with his fellow scientists what should be their next move and they all agree that their first step should be to get out of the facility and then they should find out what an Eclipso really is, as they didn't actually find anything on the internet and they now have to search for more information in books.

Inside the room the scientists have confined themselves, Emil is ready to defend himself so when the door opens he gets out holding a piece of metal. Hank Henshaw, who is in his new body and has the "S" symbol on his chest, calms Emil down and asks him if he was expecting Superman instead.

Emil and his cohorts from S.T.A.R. Labs work with Tess at Watchtower. The scientists try to study the synthesized gem serum, while Tess and the others try to locate the original person under the sway of Eclipso, Bryce Gordon. Superboy, Supergirl, and Henshaw volunteer to find him, and luckily enough, Tess has a lock on his position and sends them where Gordon is.

A few weeks after the battle with the Monitors, at a restaurant in Metropolis, Emil and Tess are eating dinner and he wonders if the new synthetic skin Tess has over her robotic body hurts. She answers it doesn't not hurt if that makes sense with Emil replying he'll have the team work on another sensation patch for her second skin's firmware. Then when they finally eat the food, they both agree the food is terrible thus leaving the restaurant. Emil tells Tess that Clark put him in touch with a man from Russia named Alexi who agreed to help Emil to get certified in space travel so that he would be able to visit her, but Tess tells him to take his time because he doesn't get as lonely as she used to be knowing that she isn't. She then kisses Emil before changing into her Red Tornado form and heading to S.T.A.R. Labs

Doctor Emil Hamilton as he appears in the comics

He first appeared in Adventures of Superman #424, as an apparent villain, using his gadgets to attack Superman in an attempt to gain funding by proving that they worked. A former employee of S.T.A.R. Labs and the US Government, it transpired he had been driven insane when all his research was bought up by Lex Luthor, who took credit for the inventions. He was placed in a mental health facility and responded well to treatment. On his release, he set up a laboratory in Suicide Slum and quickly became Superman's "scientific adviser", seeking out a general living as a technical consultant.

1618948-scienceman

Emil Hamilton; a hero in his own right.

He was responsible for creating many devices that aided Superman, including the Phantom Zone Projector and early Superman Robots, as well as helping Superman during such problems as the 'Krisis of the Krimson Kryptonite', when Red Kryptonite created by Mister Mxyzptlk shut down Superman's powers; until Superman's powers were restored, Hamilton provided him with various machinery such as a force field belt and an armored suit to allow him to continue as a hero. He also provided Superboy with the visor that duplicated Superman's vision powers (x-ray and heat vision).

Recently it was revealed that Hamilton was, in fact, the villain named Ruin, who had been targeting Clark's loved ones. Ruin claimed to have discovered that Superman was sucking the sun dry of its solar energy, and that, in 4.5 billion years, it would mean the end of life on Earth. The identity of Ruin had been kept a mystery, until it seemed that Clark's friend, and former President of the United States, Pete Ross was Ruin. Pete Ross claimed innocence, but he became even more suspect when he escaped from custody. It turned out that it had been Hamilton who had framed Ross, and kidnapped him again from prison. Hamilton then confronted and revealed himself to Superman, seemingly killing the 5th dimension imp Mr. Mxyzptlk in the process when he tried to save Superman. Superman defeated the insane Hamilton, and saved Pete, Lana, and their child. Superman later cleared Ross' name and reputation, and Hamilton was apparently imprisoned.
