- "Welcome to the most prestigious and exclusive sorority ever at Metropolis University. We are the richest. We are the prettiest. We are the best. Over the next few days, many of you will be disappointed, but if you are insanely cool and very, very lucky, you might just be chosen to be a Tri Psi and if that happens, it'll change your life forever."
- — Buffy to the Tri-Psi pledges. Thirst
Buffy Sanders was the president of the Tri-Psi sorority at Metropolis University. At some point before joining the sorority, Buffy was trapped in a bat cave infected with Kryptonite-irradiated stalactites. After being bitten, she mutated into a metahuman with vampiric-like traits.
Powers and Abilities[]
The saliva of the Kryptonite-infected vampire bats caused mutations in Buffy's body. This - combined with the bat's DNA - endowed Buffy with enhanced physical traits as well as vampiric characteristics such as an aversion to light, elongated canines, and cannibalistic tendencies.
- Super-Strength - As an added benefit of her infection, Buffy's muscles exerted inhuman force to a notably limited degree. While she couldn't match the likes of a mature Kryptonian or most other powerful metas, she was strong enough to slap Lana across a room - snapping her body in several places.
- Super-Leaping - As a result of her strength, Buffy could jump far distances, vertically and horizontally. She also could defy gravity in a minor degree while jumping, as demonstrated by Lana when she attacked Lex and Clark.
- Superhuman Durability - While she could get injured by someone with sufficient strength, Buffy's body was more tough than a human's body, however not nearly as tough as a Kryptonian's body. While attacking Luthor Mansion, Lana broke in through a window without getting any damage in the process.
- Healing Factor - Although her body could still sustain injuries, Buffy's cells could regenerate themselves at exceptionally fast rates and with far more permanence than any uninfected human - to such an extent that she could recover from several dislocated bones and even a broken neck in a matter of seconds.
- Longevity - Buffy claimed that Lana - and by extension, the rest of the Tri-Psi pledges - would live forever without ever growing old. While there was no real proof to the accuracy of this claim (which was probably derived from the immortal status of mythological vampires), given the potency of their healing factor, it isn't much of a stretch to assume it also prevents their body from deteriorating, thereby keeping them from aging beyond their physical prime.
- Super-Speed - While not as fast as a mature Kryptonian or a user of the Speed Force, Buffy's mutation afforded her a limited degree of hyper-accelerated speed. This allowed her to appear and disappear from a scene in an instant without being caught and possibly to catch any fleeing prey.
- Super-Smell - Buffy could smell blood from afar.
- Power Leech - By drinking the blood other metahumans or extraterrestrials, Buffy could metabolize some of their powers. While Buffy herself never exhibited this trait, this ability was shown when Lana - whom she infected - drank some of Clark's Kryptonian blood and inherited some of his power.
- Infectious Bite - As part of her mutation, Buffy's saliva carried a rabbis-like virus which - when introduced into the bloodstream of a victim through bites - would attack their red blood cells and prevent them from regenerating. This infection could only be treated with the Project 1138 antidote.
- Infectious Blood - Due to the blood-borne nature of her mutation, Buffy could infect or "turn" other humans into vampires like herself by forcing them to ingest her blood. This trait was inherited by her sisters as well. It was never shown if her blood could convert extraterrestrials such as Clark.
Vulnerabilities[]
- Sunlight - While not deadly, a side-affect of the disease - being rooted in the genetics of vampire bats - meant that Buffy inherited a nocturnal aversion to direct sunlight. This seemed only to be a moderate irritant to her eyesight (corrected with sunglasses) and did no harm to her flesh.
- Project 1138 - LuthorCorp's Project 1138 was able to synthesize a antidote by using Kryptonite-irradiated stalactites to keep the serum active. Had it been administered directly into her heart, it would have reversed the vampiric effects and turn Buffy fully human.
- Heat Vision - Despite her toughness, regenerative capabilities and apparent immortality, Buffy was still far from invincible. Her body was instantly and completely incinerated after Lana - having fed upon Clark's blood and thus absorbed some of his power - used heat vision on Buffy when she was about to attack her.
- Cannibalism/Blood Drainage- While never demonstrated, Buffy claimed she can kill Lana by feeding off of her, implying that Buffy, and everyone whom she infected, can be killed by draining all their blood.
Early life[]
Before attending Metropolis University, Buffy was a resident of Smallville and had in 1999 found herself trapped in a cave inhabited by Vampire Bats. The vampire bats were infected with green kryptonite-irradiated stalactites.
After being bitten by one, she mutated into a metahuman with vampiric-like traits. She was eventually rescused by LuthorCorp. She developed superhuman abilities and a desire to feed on blood.
Becoming a vampire, Buffy developed cannibalistic urges and began feeding on human blood. When she went to Met U, Buffy became the President of the Tri-Psi sorority, which was defined as the best on campus, with the richest and prettiest girls. She also turned her sorority sisters into vampires as well.
Season Five[]
Lana was forced to pledge Tri-Psi in order to find housing, since she had been accepted to Metropolis University so late. However, after she was accepted, Buffy revealed to her that the sorority sisters were vampires and turned Lana into one by cutting her own tongue and making Lana drink her blood with a kiss. While doing some digging for her story for Pauline Kahn, Chloe discovered that none of the girls who joined Tri-Psi left after joining and also that a Smallville girl, Buffy Sanders, had been trapped in a cave full of bats and was rescued by LuthorCorp. When Clark later talked to Lex about this, he revealed that kryptonite had been soak in a cave’s stalactites, infecting vampire bats, which bitten Buffy, who was infected with a strange strain of virus which turned her into a vampiric metahuman.
Later, Chloe and Clark attended a Tri-Psi Halloween party to find Lana, who was caught by Chloe dancing a little too close with another guy. She confronted Lana about this and Lana bit her, but Clark came to her rescue. Buffy saw that Clark had seen Lana bite into Chloe and threatened to have the sorority feed on Lana unless she brought Clark back to them as a meal. Lana succeeded in doing this by biting into Clark while he was visiting Lex and in the process gained his strength and heat vision. Later, when the sorority sisters were about to feed on Clark, Lana stopped them, saying that he was not a normal guy and suggested that they turn him instead. This angered Buffy, who faced off with Lana, but Lana promptly incinerated her with a blast of heat vision.
Notes[]
- Buffy's name is a parodist homage to Buffy Summers, the titular character of both the film and subsequent television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
- "Buffy Sanders" is not her real name: in Chloe's article describing the Tri-Psi sorority, she mentions that she has "changed the names to protect the vapid".
- Buffy was the third person killed by Lana Lang.
