Apokolips is the planet associated with Darkseid. When Apokolips used the magnetic force of the Omega symbols burned into peoples' skulls to pull itself into the Earth, Clark Kent embraced his destiny and pushed it back into the depths of space. Six months after the event, now referred to as "Contact", photographic evidence proving the existence of alien life on Apokolips adorns the internet and newspapers like the Daily Planet across the globe, instilling a mixed sense of concern, fear, as well as wonder.

Physical Appearance

Apokolips appears as a massive sphere, with fiery pits emanating from around it. During its first appearance, it passed by Saturn, as well as was shown to be at least as large, or even larger than the latter.

Powers and Abilities

Svapokolips

Apokolips looms over Metropolis.

Apokolips appeared to be capable of interplanetary travel and is immune to normal gravity fields. It passed Saturn without appearing to affect its rings or orbit, as well as came extremely close to both Earth and the Moon without devastating Earth's tides and causing tsunamis.

Vulnerabilities

Apokolips was drawn to Earth by the Omega symbols that Darkseid and his prophets branded onto the skulls of the humans. This meant that when Clark Kent became Superman and brought hope and inspiration to those people, their Omega symbols vanished. This made it so Apokolips was no longer attracted to Earth and was able to be hurled into space by the Man of Steel.

Season Nine

Even prior to Darkseid’s arrival on Earth via the [[Book of Rao], Amanda Waller was apparently aware of the planet’s imminent arrival (at the very least it’s existence) and revealed to Cameron Mahkent that the Justice League was the best chance against the planet, and that he was merely a test for the heroes.[1]

Season Ten

When Darkseid came to Earth, he began infecting people with the Omega symbol which seemed to only appear on those who were not completely pure of heart. The symbol acted as a magnet of sort that drew Apokolips towards Earth and thus towards Darkseid.

Clark pushes Apokolips away from Earth.

On the day of Clark and Lois' wedding, the massive planet settled into Earth orbit and began to destabilize the planet's surface causing tremors and mass panic. However, after fully accepting his destiny at long last, Clark Kent, now using the costumed identity of Superman managed to push the planet away from Earth and hurl it back into the depths of space, filling Earth's inhabitants with hope and defeating Darkseid's mark.

Notable Citizens

There has been photographic proof that aliens slaves reside on the surface of Apokolips. They also have symbol-like language and a form of writing. (Prophecy) Some of Apokolips inhabitants include:

  • Darkseid: A very powerful alien entity associated with the planet Apokolips. He has been part of some of Earth's darkest points in ancient history, but was banished. He returned to Earth to corrupt it once more through a hole in the universe which was created when the Book of Rao was used as a portal to a new world. Re-emerging on Earth, Darkseid sought a vessel to inhabit so that he could directly influence Earth's people and started to gather prophets to further his cause. Darkseid ripped Lionel's still-beating heart out to give to restore Lex while Darkseid used Lionel's corpse as a vessel to face Clark. However, Clark's memories of his heroic experiences gave him the courage to face Darkseid and defeat him.
  • Orion: The original keeper of the Bow of Orion and Darkseid's biological son. Rather than being raised by his father he was raised by another being who was dedicated to spreading the light just has much as Darkseid is to spreading darkness. That being's influence ultimately made Orion a powerful ally to the side of light and a key player in one of the early defeats of his father. (Prophecy)
  • Darkseid's prophets: Darkseid's closest and most powerful minions:
    • Granny Goodness: head administrator of St. Louise's orphanage and leader of the Female Furies. She is fiercely loyal to her master Darkseid. Preparing people for her master, Granny is responsible for wiping their minds clean.
    • Desaad, owner of a nightclub called Club Desaad, which is named after himself, works for Darkseid. Preparing people for his master, Desaad is responsible for binding the bodies of people.

Apokolips as it appears in the comics

Apokolips is an ecumenopolis with burning firepits, extant in between dimensions, occupying a 'frequency' somewhere between the physical universe and Hell: the war that destroyed the old gods and created New Genesis and Apokolips separated the Fourth World from the rest of the universe proper, leaving it accessible by Boom Tube.

The population is a downtrodden lot, including many kidnapped from other worlds before being 'broken.' The majority of the population are called "Lowlies", a bald and fearful race that has no sense of self-worth or value. The Lowlies are subject to constant abuse that ends only with death. Slightly above them are the Parademons, who serve as the keepers of order on the planet. Higher above the Parademons are the Female Furies, who are Darkseid's personal guard. (Male Furies also exist, but are less common.) They are blessed with unnatural strength and longevity and are allowed to develop as individuals. This exposure to new concepts often results in them developing comical or garish personalities that contrast strongly with the immense sadism that is required to reach their position. The leaders of the Furies are Granny Goodness, who sports the appearance of a matronly old woman while being the most powerful of the guards, as well as Kanto, who enjoys a unique position as Darkseid's master assassin. The chief guard, Big Barda, had a third position under Granny, which has not been filled since her defection from the group.

Orion, Kalibak, as well as Darkseid as they appear in the comics

Surprisingly, Apokolips is second to New Genesis in technological advancement. With their technology, they are the height of power in most of the universe and are able to devastate galaxies when they choose to use it. Apokoliptian technology is furthermore the source of unparalleled misery in the universe as the planet routinely arms evil groups with advanced technology in order to further its influence (and misery) across the universe.

Apokolips is ruled by Darkseid as its theocratic god/despot, but he defers most of the actual day to day ruling to his counselor Desaad. Darkseid has no real contenders for the throne of Apokolips except the demon Mantis, although his sons Orion, Kalibak, as well as Grayven are also potential contenders. Darkseid is cursed by Grayven and Kalibak's stupidity and Orion's service of good. It is prophesied that Orion will overthrow Darkseid.

If Darkseid is overthrown, perhaps the results will not cause any major changes on Apokolips, as Apokolips' evil comes from itself rather than its master. This assertion, however, is debatable, as well as it is often said that Darkseid powers Apokolips with his ambient forces, which is where the fire pits come from

Notes

  • When Amanda Waller was talking to Icicle, the closed captioning spelled the word apocalypse as "Apokolips".
  • Geoff Johns was asked on Twitter if the word apocalypse was spelled as "Apokolips" in the script. His response was, "With a capital "A".[2]

Trivia

Quotes

Amanda Waller: You don't have the talent to take a team like that out. There's an army of heroes growing. This generation and the last are coming together, and I'm gonna need them if we're going to survive the Apokolips that's coming this way.
Season Nine, Absolute Justice, Part 2

Red Queen: You say you're saving the planet, but you really only care about yourself. You figured out Maxwell's charade because you know in your heart that Oliver's declaration of love was a lie. You can't comprehend what it means to truly protect someone you love. And stay away from Clark Kent. If you're not careful, you'll end up on the wrong side of the coming Apokolips.
Season Nine, Hostage

Oliver: I'm starting to regret not packing my intergalactic dictionary about now. No way these are Celtic.
Kara: No. They're Apokoliptian.
Season Ten: Prophecy

Granny Goodness: I want to give your soul eternal life! Please, Lutessa, let me save you!
Tess: From what?
Granny Goodness: Darkseid's Apokolips. Evil in its purest form -- the heart of human nature, obscured over time as something to be cast away rather than embraced. Hades, Kali -- even the word "Lucifer" is an old Latin phrase meaning "morning star," "bringer of light." I'm afraid the centuries and translations have twisted Darkseid's true gifts. But before the end of days, his rapture will be the only salvation.
Tess: I will never join you.
Granny Goodness: Farewell, my child. Bless your soul.
Tess: Wait. When? I mean, what you do mean? When? When is this hell coming?
Granny Goodness: It's not coming, Lutessa. It's upon us.
Season Ten: Finale, Part 1

Oliver: I've done what you asked. They won't know Apokolips is coming.
Granny Goodness: Our dark lord will be pleased.
Season Ten: Finale, Part 1

Lex: Our story hasn't been written yet, Kal-El. And every villain is only as great as his hero. But, you see, that all relies on you saving us from the coming Apokolips.
Clark: You know about Darkseid?
Lex: You really thought I just read the cliff notes of the Veritas journals? They foretold of a chosen savior — the light that will inspire this world out of darkness. You are the light, Clark. Only you have the power within.
Season Ten: Finale, Part 2
